  • timing chain?

i have been searching through the forums for the past 30 minutes trying to figure out what the heck is ticking and clanking in my motor.

i have a 1995 3.4 ltr v6 and i believe i have the same problem that loochy had (i sent you an email loochy if you could help me out and respond i would GREATLY appreciate it!)

it sounds like something is clanking against something in the back of the motor. in the thread about loochys car he says it's the timing chain stretching and hitting the cover...

also my car is about to hit 85k miles and would like to do a tune up. what would be a good thing to do?

    -i just did plugs.
-and ALL the fluids(oil, rear, tranny etc)

    -should i do injectors?

also i had a question...would replacing the lifters and rods be a smart idea? would it help some "tick" go away? i think perhaps the person that had the motor before me(i blew mine last christmas), might have bent one and it hasn't gotten bad until now...just wear i assume...

thank you for ALL your help and knowledge! it is GREATLY appreciated!

    Re: timing chain?

well it isnt you timing chain if it is coming from the back of the motor. It seems like the noise you are talking about is pretty loud. so here's what it could be, a bad lifter or an exhaust leak. However, if you notice the car running worse and the knock getting heavier and performance hindering under acceleration, you migh thave spun a bearing.

        Re: timing chain?

it's not necessarily coming from the back of the motor, i think i saw that in the thread about Loochy's car and just was like, "eh kinda sounds like it", so i put that too. it's not an exhaust leak.

the ticking happens right at start up and you can notice at idle, also after heavy load...ie the donut i did last night. after i got done whipping it around it was clicking/knocking HARD, then i let it idle, and then drove the 5 or so miles home, and within about 2 miles the heavy ticking was gone...it was just back to regular...any ideas?

i'm so lost and would really like to make this ticking go away or just quiet down a bit, would replacing the rods and lifters help at all?

also, where can i get a timing chain and how hard is it to replace?

        thank you for the help.

i dont think its your timing chain regardless. you said the ticking went away after 2 min, is it still gone? anr replacing the lifter will only help is the noise was coming from a lifter, but would a lifter really tick as loud as you are describing......probably not.

            you're probably right...lol

the HEAVY ticking went away after a couple minutes, but it is still there. it sounds exactly like the sound click loochy has on his thread so i'm baseing my opinion off of that. also the ticking has been there since i put this motor in...i'm honestly stuck on what the heck it could be...

so what do you think it is? a connecting rod? something that's going to be a major PITA to replace...

                Re: timing chain?

unfortunately no...i've got a camera, but the coard that connects the camera to the computer is at my house, i'm at my apartment at school. i'm going to be getting it this weekend.

btw, if it is a connecting rod, what does it sound like, and what does it involve to fix it?

                  Re: timing chain?

I'm thinking that you have a lifter with an excessive leak down rate (worn). With light engine loads and low RPM all you get is a light ticking sound. But with heavy accelleration and Higher RPMs the lifter can't remain pumped up and the valve train clearences get excessive, thus the louder ticking. The lifter eventually pumps up again at lower RPM and the noise gets quieter.

                    Re: timing chain?

wow dude that basically explained it...sooo i'm gonna replace the lifters and rods over christmas break when i can afford to have the car down.

anybody know where i can get these parts, i would like to avoid going to the stealership.

another thing is how hard are they to install?

                      Re: timing chain?

                      ZZP sells the lifters.

                      install is fairly simple, imo.
                      Remove upper intake manifold
                      remove lower intake
                      remove valve covers
                      remove rockers
                      pull push rods and lifters

btw when i was tearing down my engine the first time just taking off the intake was such a PITA, any tips or tools of the trade?

EDIT: i just looked at the ZZP website and i don't see anything for the 3.4 liter V6...or am i blind?

ahhh 3.4, no you arent blind i will see if i can find something else.

                          racheting Wrenches FTW!

you will also need new rocker arm bolts
                          intake gaskets, (upper and lower)
                          throttle body gasket
new injector O-rings ( you will have to revome the fuel rail, they are cheap, good idea)
might as well do valve cover gaskets as well

if i can think of more i will let you know
