  • Oil Leak

I have an oil leak that is leaking onto my exhaust pipe and can not find the problem. I have replaced the oil and oil filter. When the oil leaks onto the pipe it burns off or runs down the pipe to the middle of the car. I would like to know if anyone had any ideas of what this may be and what I need to do to fix it.

Prob the rear main seal or the oil pan gasket.

        Dude.
You didn't say what year you had.

If you have the 3.4L v6, look on the side of the engine by the oil filter on the driver side of the car.
There is a unit that sticks out out by where the oil filter is, and has a electrical connection on the other end of it. It should have some silver tape/cover over it. This is called the "oil pressure sending unit" it went bad in my car like 3 months ago. I leaked oil exactly as you described, and it got worse and worse and would all drip down the exahust on my car all the way down to the cat after a while. Exactly like you said (I know I said that before, but it's deja vu.)

Check to see if that is where it's leaking, the exhaust pipe under the unit should be black. Also if you take the electrical plug and taped cover off the end of it, they will both have oil all up in them.

The part was only like $30 at Autozone.

If it was his OSU, it wouldnt be getting on his exhaust. But I have seen OSU's go bad and they do just that, leak a lot of oil.

yes I have actually looked at this and replaced the oil sending unit about 3 days ago and i am still getting a leak but it is lot smaller than before. it wasnt from about an inch and a half puddle to about a penny size. I am not sure what is happening now. Thanks josh

            ps it is a 95 3.4 v6

That's not true man. Did you read my post?
I had oil leaking on my exhaust all the way down to my cat after a while. I could see it smoking off the exahust.

I replaced my oil sending unit, and no more problems.
(After the orginal oil burned off.)

You might not have a 3.4L, and the oil pressure sending unit is in totally different places on the 3.4L and the 3.8L.
So it's possible it wouldn't drip on the exhaust on your car, but would in mine and jsviking's as we both have 3.4L's and not a 3.8L like you (assuming you have one).
If you do have a 3.4L then are you calling me a lier? :)

Did you use some teflon tape or something of that nature when you put the new one in?

                    Re: Oil Leak

how old is the oil pan gasket?

also, there is sometimes a leak from teh oil pump plug/decapitated dizzy thing in teh back of the intake manifold. Usually a $0.98 sbc dizzy gasket takes care of this no prob.

                        Re: Oil Leak

I will look at that. But what exactly is it? Is it the thing that plugs into the side of the oil pan??

when your lower intake gasket was leaking did it get all over your valvecovers or anything? or was leaking anywhere out of the engine it self?
