  • Ticking under da hood

Hey I have a 98 3.8 a4 with like 52k mileage on it. Since ive had it its been driven pretty hard, you know racingm donuts, all that good ****. But it seems like over the last two days ive been hearing a ticking, only reason why I heard it is because I had to get out and punch in some #'s at a gate, maybe its always been like this. I lifted the hood and still heard it, sounded or looked like the sound was coming from the injectors. I went to the exhaust and put my ear next to it, had a friend rev it, didnt hear anything that sounded like a lifter. Any suggestions as to what it could be? Could this have something to do with my poor MPG and ET's???

Our 3.8's injectors make a ticking noise from when you first buy the car. It should not be to loud though. But, you should expect a slight ticking noise, that'z just the injectors.

An easy way to check that it is not the lifters is to take a 18" ratchet extension and put it over each cylinder on the valve cover. Put your ear up to the other end. If the ticking is under there you'll hear it. Sounds strange but trust me, you'll hear it.

Well, I just installed a new drive belt. Not hard at all. But, after I got it installed I started the car up to let it run a little. Welp, all of a sudden, I hear a little louder ticking noise other than the injectors. I was like ohh great a lifter. But, after putting my ear up to different parts of the engine, I found it was not the injectors nor lifters but, the sound was coming from near the throttle body. PCV. Looks like I'll be replacing that tomorrow. FUN FUN. :D
