  • Camaro is turning over, but wont catch fire.

Its a 91 camaro 3.1 v6. its turning over, but its not catching fire. We did a spark test, and its not getting any spark from the distributor to the coil or to the plugs.
By process of elmination, we put on a new fuel filter(before it wouldnt spark), coil, and we just bought the igniter/pick-up that is inside the distributor. We have been told many times that that pickup goes out on older GMs, because it is the electrical part inside the distributor. We cannot get the piece inside the distributor cap to come off. It is supposed to have some O-rings or something, but it doesnt. It is all rusty and corroded, so we are hoping this is our problem.

Earlier that day, my car started cutting out, so i pull over, look under the hood, and with no effort at all i pulled the middle plug wire on the left side off. I put it back on, and made sure i felt the click.
So I go down the road a bit, and it starts cutting out again, but this time its cutting out so bad it shuts off on me. I tried to crank, and it wouldnt. waited, and it cranked, but then it started smoking like crazy. waited, and it cranked, but no matter how much gas you give it, it shuts off, however it is fine at idle. then it is where its at now from my first paragraph, wont crank.

Thank you for reading all that, i am very desperate for help.

I gotta get this car running, it is my only means of transportation. So thanks for any help.

Well the plug wires are brand new pretty much. just put em on there couple weeks ago. If it was those it would at least crank.

It has to be something inside the distributor.

verify no corrosion at the batt terminals
verify you're getting 12v+ to the icm
        verify grounds
get the icm tested for free

forget, what codes are you getting?

How exactly do you get the codes? something like turning switch on off, watch for blink.
And the engine is turning over, so its not the battery. And thanks, but I am not sure of certain abbreviations, so if you could spell those out that would help. lol sorry.

Re: Camaro is turning over, but wont catch fire.

We took off the distributor, and replaced the pick-up.
still wont catch fire. But now we are smelling gas. The fuel pump is coming on when I turn the key, but then up in the engine compartment there is another noise, and after many times of trying to figure out what the new noise is, we smell a lot of gas.

Man i am so frustrated. I dont know what to do. I guess we should replace that ignition module(or some call it that black box on the distributor). Its about $30, so I guess that'll be our next thing.

We think that the timing is off as well.

Thanks again, any more help is very appreciated.

PS, who is the MORON that designed the distributor to be in the back like that! What a terrible place, you cant barely get your hands in there!

icm = ignition control module. get that tested before you replace it.

should have teh provedures to pull codes in your haynes/chiltons, or when you go get the icm checked, ask for the GM key & a print out of procdures

Well, before i even came back here and checked your post, i tried to have that module tested, but they couldnt. so i bought one, replaced it, and it cranked!!(enter halelujah music)

That little stupid black box gave me many headaches.

thanks a lot for your help.

good to hear you fixed the problem.

one thing to always check when youre working with electrical stuffs is your fuses/relays.

i had a problem with my ignition after installing new coils and it turned out i just blew the fuse.
