ok, Im going to have to see if I cant get my hands on one of those..got the damn thing held in place...and busted my wrench on it...and no, before someone says it, it wasnt some cheap POS...The tightness of this nut seems rather excessive...no? lol
That's rather amazing that it still won't budge. Is there a lot of rust on it or what? Have you tried putting something on it to lubricate it and see if it will budge any then?
I'm really at a loss for words that it still won't budge, there has to be some way of getting it to come off. All I can think to do is to keep trying, it has to come loose eventually.
I have never met a harmonic dampener that came off easy!
The last 3.8 I did (in my olds 88) I used a 1/2 inch impact socket and 1/2 inch drive flex bar with a 6 foot pipe over that. I had my father-in-law use a prybar to jamb the ring gear (starter removed). It took everything I had on the 6 foot bar to break the bolt free. There was no rust on the bolt. The impulses of the the crankshaft just naturally tighten up that bolt.
The last damper that I took off was this summer on the Caddy Northstar 4.6 l. I broke my 1/2 inch socket and my 1/2 inch flex bar! SON-O-VICH that bolt was tight! Finally got it off by using a 3/4 inch impact socket and ratchet and we had to attach one end of a chain to one of the pully bolts (that bolts the pully on to the damper) and the other end of the chain to a bolt up on one of the heads. So how much force did it take? Pulling 150 lbs on a 6 foot bar! You do the math!!!
Try to get an impact gun on the bolt, I doubt that you will though, because you will need at leat a 1/2 inch impact gun and I don't think you can get one that big in between the damper and the radiator.

CDNFB - I was using a 1/2 in impact gun....and it still won't move. Tomorrow, I think I am going to go get the longer breaker bar I can find, a nice long pipe, and either it will come off, or I'll die trying lol Its pissing me off greatly, because otherwise I'd have been done with this long since...
as for putting lubricant on the bolt...have tried wd-40...thinking maybe I should try some liquid wrench stuff? I dont know...this just seems amazingly absurd....lol
I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try the liquid wrench stuff. And also, from what the above poster said......I guess it's just hard as hell to get it off. I wouldn't know as I have never tried to remove one, I was just giving advice that I could think of.
Anyways, good luck with trying to get that thing off.
The bolt holding the harmonic damper is tightened to 150Nm + 114 deg. which is one whole s*** load of tightness.
With the "Camaro Performers" magazine "FV6" project, we had that damper off twice to change cams. We used a 26" Mac Tools 1/2-dr breaker bar and an impact socket to break it loose. It took all my strength and bracing my feet against a front tire to do it.
It doesn't surprise me that even some 1/2-dr impact wrenches cannot break it.
You won't get it with "Liquid Wrench" or any other penetrant either because the problem is not rusted or seized threads, it's tightness.
I suggest either doing it the hard way--a top quality breaker bar of at least 24" with an impact socket on it or a high-end 1/2-dr impact with a lot of air pressure or, better yet, a 3/4-dr impact gun.
To reinstall that bolt you MUST have a torque angle meter in addition to a torque wrench. If you don't, you can't properly retorque the bolt and, improper torque on that bolt can be dangerous.
But you can't use just any socket. It must be an impact socket. The wall thickness is much greater than a regular socket and can take a real beating.
If I were you, I would go beg/borrow/steal a 3/4 inch drive breaker bar and a 3/4 inch drive IMPACT socket. Put at least a 6 foot pipe over the breaker bar to extend/increase your leverage. You will twist the crank in half before you break those tools!

CDNFB - just got a hold of what you said...now, my dilemma is holding the flywheel again...because I cant get it held strong enough now. anyone know what the tool is called for holding the flywheel? because I dont, and going into the local auto parts stores just asking for it by what it does has yielded nothing....
auto666 - I dont have the funds for anything stronger for an impact wrench, as the one I used was up to 380lbs of torque...most anything I find stronger than that is WAY more...and has air demands out of the range of my compressor...
I'm in TX, by the way, on the AR border....about ready to accidentally shove it off a cliff....lol
Good luck with shoving it off a cliff. If you need any tips or advice on how to do this properly give me a shout and I can tell you.
As for your real problem, I hope that you fiddle with it enough to get that sucker off, and I know it's rather frustrating but just keep tinkering with it. Ask around for the parts that have been suggested to take it off with. Also, go to all your local auto parts stores and Home Depot and Lowe's and places like that, I know all of them should rent or borrow out tools so that you don't have to waste the money on purchasing them if you are only going to need it once in awhile and not an every week user.
Best of luck, and I hope you get it before you decide to shove it off a cliff :)
Good luck man sombodys gotta live near by, HELP HIM. Thats the hole point of this web site to share info, debait, and HELP each other. by the way why are you changing your oil pump?
because I have no oil pressure...and its not the regulator valve...no leaks externally, no oil burning or loss...coolant is clean...so I'm thinking its just not pumping it....
well what do you know! I finally got it off...was coated in RTV??? But anyways...now I discover that the puller from Autozone...doesnt have the right bolts with it! Got to love that...so...tomorrow, once its daylight again...got to get the right bolts...
Haven’t done anything on the Camaro, but put LEDs on my truck headlights . And my oil pressure sensor went out on the truck so going to fix that this...
