  • Whining noise from the rear..?

Ok today I actually didn't have my radio on when I went to go drive my car. I noticed a slight.............idk whining/mechanical noise is the best I can say. Coming from the rear? The fuel tank is by the trunk right........and the fuel pump is there? Right? So is that what i'm hearing? And should I be concerned? Its not really that loud, thanks.

Well, I had a whine once, but it was kinda loud as I was accelerating. It would go away upon deceleration though. Turns out that the pinion shaft SEAL was bad. $300 later (back in the early 90's) it was fixed. Now, it cost's a bit more to fix.

When was the last time (if at all) that the rear was serviced and the fluid changed?

I've only had the car since August. So I have no clue when the fluid was last changed...........but this noise does not change in speed or noise volume when I accelerate/decelerate. Its very very faint, I leaned back to try to hear it better. So idk *shrug*

most likley its your fuel pump in the tank. they are known to be very noisy and can make a whining noise from the rear that can be heard inside the passanger compartment. when they get quiet is actually a sign that they are wearing out and you should check that the fuel pressure is is within specs. if you want to know if it is your pump and you can remember what the noise sounds like you can have a friend sit in the car and you can go to the back and put your head down underneath your car and when he or she turns the car on you should hear the noise briefly and then it should stop, that is just your fuel system pressurising its self. now dont just drive to a place shut it down and expect to hear the noise you have to give that car at least an hour to leak pressure down. i hope that this helps you and i hope that your just hearing that pump working, good luck.
