  • Am I getting good gas mileage?

This last tank of gas I got 413 miles......and filled up about 14+ gallons(our tanks hold 16 right?). I have a 95' M5 Coupe 144,XXX miles. (bought at 141,XXX) To my knowledge, the car was mainly highway miles and driven by a business woman.

I have had this car since August 24th. So far I have done..

SLP Cold Air Intake installed at 142,5XX miles.
Added Purple Ice to coolant. Changed oil with Royal Purple and a K&N Oil Filter at 141,741 miles.
Seafoam the gas(141,546), oil(141,569), and top end(141,569). Seafoam Deep Creep the intake.

Even though you can run royal purple for 12k miles(btw I drive mainly highway, about 600-700+ miles a week) I will probably change it at 150k just to get that old **** out.

So does this sound like a decent gas mileage improving plan at 150k miles...

#1 - Do Seafoam treatment for gas/oil/upper intake. Run that through before doing next steps
#2 - 4 new tires, Bridgestone Blizzak REVO 1 (and alignment)
#3 - Change oil with Royal Purple
#4 - Change Oil filter with K&N one
#5 - Change fuel filter(how...how much, and what brand?)
#6 - Spark plugs(what brand, how much gapping?)
    #7 - Wires(what brand)
    #8 - Distributor cap(brand..?)

Thats probably all i'm going to beable to afford to do(mainly the tire part), i'd like to install a aluminum driveshaft too but I doubt I could get one cheap.

Anyways does that sound like a good gas mileage improvement plan at 150k? Any other thoughts? Thanks

Well that calculates to 29.5 mpg. I'd say that is pretty much incredible. Great gas mileage.

With your current gas mileage, I would not do anything. Save your money, you do not need a tune up. Just keep the oil changes current.

              i get around 16mpg with my 3.4l :(

i did everything. o2s, plugs, wires, coils, air filter, oil change, pcv, cat, exhaust, tires.

              mpg stayed the same.

Re: Am I getting good gas mileage?

underdrive pullies and an aluminum ds (usally $125) will do the most for your gas mileage.
bosch makes good wires, and copper ngks at .045 (advance auto/ parts america carries them) or delco rapidfires if you want a platinum plug

Re: Am I getting good gas mileage?

Ok but shouldn't I at least do spark plugs/wires because they were not changed as you can see above from when I did the first seafoam treatment. I heard carbon or w/e will build up on the plugs after a treatment, plus god knows when they were last changed.

How much is a underdrive pulley? And are they hard to install?

I'll look into getting a aluminum ds and I could really use some new tires as some of them do not hold air(constantly airing them up) and low tread. Plus with winter coming up.....yeah lol. Also same as the plugs/wires with the 1st seafoam treatment, I heard it takes a toll on the fuel filter too. So where can I buy an aluminum ds? I mean I prefer not paying $400 for one at rksport(only place I know that sells them)

Re: Am I getting good gas mileage?

I have to agree with the rest of the crowd. Save your money on the tune up, you don't really need it. You are getting great gas mileage just the way it is. Though, if you feel you should change the spark plugs/wires and fuel filter, you shouldn't really worry about buying performance plugs/wires because they really aren't needed in this case to get better gas mileage.

If it is running that well, why mess with it???

LOL. My 1993 3.4L gets about 17 city / 20 hwy. I have decided to just live with it. I am convinced it is something in the computer or wiring that is telling it to run rich, but it either way it runs very well. Just uses a bit more fuel then it should.

My '97 3.8 gets about the same, maybe even a little less. It's been so long since I've driven it I can't remember exactly how bad of gas mileage it got. Now I'm just afraid about driving it, due to the gas prices now compared to the last time I was driving it. It's right at a dollar more for a gallon then the last time I drove it.

Dang man, I went from 14mpg to 23 just by changing my driving habbits. I know if I drive like an old lady I could easily get 30mpg out of this thing. I've got a 97 3.8 M5 BTW, and I'm thinking of SeaFoam, plugs, wires, and oil soon (oil's about 300 miles overdue, so I figured I'd go ahead and do the rest, just to make sure everything's upto date).
