  • Car problems..Need input

Alrighty...I mine as well ask here to get some input for my problem.

Recently, when I turn on my car, there will be a slight hesitation before/during start up. After that, the car begins to idle pretty rough. If I'm in gear with the brakes pressed down, the entire car vibrates/shakes. My exhaust also gets Extremely loud. It sounds like the car has an aftermarket Cam. I kind of like the sound actually..it sounds like an V8 sort of.. Pick-up definetely drops off...I can feel a lose of power.

This does not happen 100% of the time. Sometimes, the car will start normal, and drive fine with no problem. Other times, it will start with all the above symptoms..and then when I step on, automatically fixes itself and runs normal. It has never run normal and then went bad. But it can go bad to normal. I can tell if the problems occure in the start up of the car. I also seem to get quite a bit of white smoke coming from the exhaust.

This may also be linked to the problem... If I leave my car sitting for a few days without ever turning it on..I'll have trouble getting it started. I turn the key and it cranks and starts, but dies immediately. I wasn't expecting this problem that night,,so I was irritated. I continually turned the key, and pressed the gas for the half of second it would start. After doing this several times, I noticed a **** load of white smoke coming from the exhaust. (If you've ever sea-foamed your car,,it looked like that). There was also a strong chemical smell. Once I finally got it started at idle, I put it in reverse, and the car died. I kept trying,,and once I drove it for about 1/4 mile, everything was fine. That problem just happens when I leave the car sitting for over a day without starting it.

On a side note..may or may not be related..I recently failed emissions. I passed the carbon monoxide test, but failed the hydrocarbons.

I have some ideas of what the problem may be, but I would like to hear what you all think. Any insight would be appreciated.

My guess would be the fuel delivery -injectors, fuel filter, etc.
My car sits in my garage for alot longer than a few days. I have it in there sometimes for over 3 weeks, and it starts fine.
If you are seeing white smoke from your exhaust, I'd replace the PCV and pull the spark plugs to see if they have any oil on them. White smoke could also be the cause of worn valve guides.

I'm thinking that your running rich before your car gets outta the cold loop. My best guess is your Cat is done from the rich condition.

I just put on a Carsound high flow cat on couple months ago.

I'm hoping it's not the injectors,,I heard those are pricey to replace. I can't say I know what misfires/not running on all cylinders feels like..I'm running original plug wires and I've never changed the spark plugs yet since I bought the car. I'll be doing that this week. I fear it is a fuel delivey problem :( . I'm hoping its ignition related.. I replaced my fuel filter a couple months ago also. I don't want to deal with damn injectors!

Another symptom I've discovered,,though it may not be related to the problem, is when I punch it on the highway and let off, I get very bad backfire.

I hate spending a lot of money on regular maintenance, rather than performance.
