        Re: Idle?

My 93 3.4 Firebird did that a few months back. The dealer said I had a vaccuum leak on the lower intake manifold, maybe your problem will be an easy fix.

            Re: Idle?

Start by looking at all the vaccum hoses to be sure that they are all plugged in and there are no cracks or anything.

idle speed depends on engine temp. At different temps it is suppose to idle at a certain rpm. does it idle at 1200 all the time?

if my car idled at 900 would that be normal?

                      Re: Idle?

hold on, I will upload a stock manual 98 bin and get the idle settings.

Do you have a manual or an auto? It looks like the manuals have slightly higher numbers when compared to the auto

Also 900 with a fully warmed up engine is still slightly high. I can see a cold engine idling at 900 in gear, but after driving for a bit it shouldn't be 900

silly question: Why does the RPM jump to 1200 when the temp reaches 284 F?

Not really that silly cuz I am not really sure why gm did that either. Maybe to try and push the coolant through faster or something, I dunno, but at 284* you should have the car shut off already anyways, lol

                            Re: Idle?

Idle speed is not adjustable. It also does not vary with temperature except in the very early stages of warm-up.

If your idle is 1200 rpm, the engine has either been improperly modified or you have a vacuum leak.

The factory Service Manual has good troubleshooting instructions for improper idle speed. You might take a look at that.

Is the check engine light on?

sometimes the idle will jump from 900 to 1200 but since ive owned the car its always been steady at 900 and usually cars dont idle that high? i dont want to bring it to a shop because of the idle
