well man I think once you clear the codes, and let it reset a new code you will be able to track down the problem pretty quickly as it will either be a bad or burned wire.. or one of your coils could have died.. a bad wire can make a coil go bad..

i was just thinking that too. i stopped by autozone, two of them actually, each 17miles in the opposit direction of where i live. neither of them even had the OBD2 tool for sale let alone to borrow or even rent. in fact when i asked the sales rep just gave me a look like i was from mars or something at both stores.
this would be so much easier to figure out with a few tools. now its possible all my wires/plugs are just fine but the coil gave out, and i won't know unless replace everything. which is obviously both a b1tch and expensive.
ok, more later.Silver \'98 Camaro M5<br />Current MODs:<br />SLP strut tower brace; SLP 1LE swaybars front/back; Powerslot rotors; Hawk pads; Eibach springs; Bilstein SLP shock kit; SLP trans mount; Zexel limited-slip differential; LS1 drive shaft.<br />Possible future MODs:<br />BMR Lower Control Arms; BMR Pandhard Rod.

keshun...
if a coil burned out, say because of a bad wire, would both terminals of the coil stop working or just the one connecting the bad wire?Silver \'98 Camaro M5<br />Current MODs:<br />SLP strut tower brace; SLP 1LE swaybars front/back; Powerslot rotors; Hawk pads; Eibach springs; Bilstein SLP shock kit; SLP trans mount; Zexel limited-slip differential; LS1 drive shaft.<br />Possible future MODs:<br />BMR Lower Control Arms; BMR Pandhard Rod.

when my coil died it was just one terminal.. gave me a misfire on #5 but not the even cylinder that the coil fired. (i forget what the other cylinder that coil was sending spark to)
I just remembered someone mentioned on the board before that autozone had to stop scanning peoples codes for them in california because of a lawsuit.. dunno if it was true but that could be why they didn't know what you were talking about.. sounds like you are down to finding a shop that will do it for ya..-Brad

alright, it must be something really stupid. just to double check, this is how the cylinders are numbered:

6 5
4 3
2 1

OK i've replaced all my plugs, wires ,coil packs trying to find my extremely bad random misfire. This only happened when the car was under load.
I've finely found the problem many dollars later.
so hear it is . i had a clogged cat(covered). finely found the problem when the back pressure broke one of my bolts off in my manifold(not covered) .
many many more dollars later it runs like a new car again.
a tell tale sign of this is a rattling sound in the exhaust. wow. thanks for the heads up man.
in other news, i bought a $30 set of "borg-warner" standard 7mm wires at a local pep boys and put them in instead of the originals. it turns out that two of the originals had developed cracks in them, perhaps when i pulled them out 2 weeks (fack! its been 2 weeks that i've been chasing this stupid problem on and off) ago. so when i put them in, they started arcing. now that the BWs are in, everything is fine. the engine is actually more responsive now than before i touched it (or so it seems).
looking back, i should have diched the idea of trying to make the Taylors work and gotten another set of regular wires right away. i'd have been done in 2 days instead of 2 weeks. the sad thing is, i had $40 "invested" in the Taylors, so i was hardheaded about letting them go. ironically by doing that i also wasted a lot of time out of my winter break that i could have been having fun instead of getting hand cramps, scrapes and grease stains under the car.
i'm just going to chalk it up to a string of bad luck and forget it. ok, i'm done ranting. i'm actually smiling as i type.
