Ok, the GM bulletin does not say that K&N filters are bad, will cause problems, and will void the warranty for certain conditions stated in the bulletin.
It does say that people who do not follow K&N's cleaning instructions properly, and over-oil their filters, can cause problems to their car and void their own warranty.
Big difference between calling the filters a problem and calling the owner the problem.
Follow directions, give it the proper amount of oil, and you'll be fine. GM will have to prove that excessive oil on the MAF caused by overoiling of the filter led to the driveability and other problems to void your warranty.

You guys are missing the point...
K&Ns will not hurt your car so calm down
Only bad thing is if you over oil it, it might mess up your MAF sensor...
But if you take your car to the dealership for any of those things listed... they will not cover it by warranty. Reason being, companies do not like fixing things under warranty...
Especially when it comes to sports cars... Statistically it has probably been proven, that if you race your car, you most likely have a K&N filter since it is usually the first and most basic mod.
And since we tend to tear cars up more then grandma does, GM is using this as a loophole to not do warranty work on a car. Because most people with K&N filters on there cars race them.
The stuff posted earlier about specifying which brand of air filter is true, but the differnece is they are talking about switching ot an oiled reusable high-flo air filter. They consider anything but a paper replacement to be an aftermarket part...
EITHER WAY....
Long story short, if you take your car in for warranty work and have nothing but a K&N, take it out and put a stock one back in and do what I did...
I run my 14.4 run in my car, 2 weeks later, I go to dealership to get warranty work... I made my car near perfectly stock(except for descreened MAF) to get my CAT replaced under warranty.
Tech asks "Do you have an aftermarket modifications to the car?"
I say: "You mean like modifications to make it faster? Its a v6, I didn't know people raced these things." And gave him a puzzled look.
I got my CAT replaced free of charge, and they even told me all the codes they pulled from my ECM.
Then I competed in an autocross 2 days later, in prepared class...
If you are getting warranty work done and your car is stock except for a air filter, put a paper one in
Sure you might be able to fight it and make it so they have to prove how the mod caused other parts to fail prematurely, but do you really wanna deal with fighting one fo the largest companies(I think they are 2nd or 3rd) in the world, instead of spending $8 and popping to clips if you are making a warranty claim on your car?
I am jsut giving people a heads up.

Comments:
1. I always have had a paper filter on hand - for when the K&N is being cleaned. I always let the K&N air dry for a day before (not excessively) oiling the K&N. I need the paper filter for those times.
2. The nearest Chevy dealer (where I take my car for servcie) sells Vette and Camaro oilable filters in the parts department. They even proudly put them on display in the waiting area. So, it seems they certainly won't complain about such filters.
3. If I take the car in for anything that could be affected by this issue, I'd certainly swap out the air filter to the paper one, just to be sure I don't get some guy who is trying to fabricate a story. However, most GM dealers are not looking for a reason to have their claims rejected by GM -so I doubt they will, in general, be difficult.
4. Who are these people excessively oiling the filters anyway? It seems kind of straightforward when you look at K&N's instructions.I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

whats to say I can't do a cam... a cam is a cam...
The fact is the car came with a paper filter... not an oiled cotten one...
Either, way I just put it out as a warning, do what you wish, but frankly, I woudl rather my sh|t be taken care of no questions with an $8 filter, I probably will have laying around after I install a K&N then having to go back and forth with lawyers argueing, and reports proving my K&N is a good enough air filter.
keep yours in...
I sent a money order out ot go buy my K&N when if I go in for warranty work, I am going to swap it. Worth my 2 mintues of time over lots of arguing with a dealer.

I've taken my car into the dealer twice since I modified it and they haven't said a word about it being voided of warranty. Of course all of my problems are asythetic, chassis, and lighting problems. Never had a powertrain part go bad yet. But even if I did, I'm sure they'd fix it, they're good guys down there at Ultimate Pontiac in Fredericksburg

for serious warranty work, you want the car stock. Soem may be lucky, but hell, on my car, I have had over $3,500 in warranty work done. How do you feel paying $3,500 in repairs because you were to lazy to pull your K&N filter out and put your stocker in?
I just giving this as a warning, take it how you want, feel free to hook up a nitrous system and tell them you run nitrous daily if you like. But it may void your warranty.

I actually had this problem a while ago. I didn't over oil the filter but I didn't let it dry for a long enough period of time. In a day, I noticed the car running funny. It took me a week to finally figure out that the oil had coated the MAF which was making the car run lean. But that was because of my impatience.
