Gas?

after my car sits for a lil while after running and i get back in my car the interior smells like gas... What could be the problem?!

Every once in a while when a friend gets into my car, they say it smells like gas. I personally don't smell it, but I guess I could have the same problem.

well when you car sits, it is wallowing in its own fumes.

Yeah, it's just sitting there and that's when the fumes start to seap through the back seat and come into the interior. That, or you have an exhaust leak (or is it only before you start your car?)

My Ford Granada does this, even when driving, so it's not really safe because you get high off fumes by the time you get a quarter mile up the road, if you are in the back seat it's even worse. :(

but it doesn't smell like exhaust it smells like gas ... Do you know how i can find a gas leak??

Inspect your gas tank thoroughly?

We were all trying to tell you that whenever your car sits for awhile, it's just sitting their in it's own fumes. The gas will start to seap through the back seat and the fumes will stagnate inside the vehicle. It's totally normal.

You gotta explain this back seat thing cause for 3rd and 4th Gen F bodies it's not making alot of sense to me.

1st and 2nd Gen F bodies did have a vent collector behind the back seat bolted to the pax compartment/trunk bulkhead, and it was possible to get fumes from that.

3rd and 4th Gen F bodies do not have any fuel or fuel vent lines that pass through the passenger compartment. To get fumes in the pax compartment you would have to have 2 failures. First, the fuel system would have to have a leak in it somewhere allowing fuel or vapors to escape. Second, you would have to have an opening in the body to allow the fumes to enter the car.

Just a guess on my part, but check under the carpet in the hatch area just behind the seat to see if anyone cut the cargo floor open to access the fuel pump for an easy change. If that's what was done, the cutout might not be sealed properly and the pump installation might be leaking/seeping.

well you have to realize that one, the body is not sealed by any means and second, the evap system vents fumes. so, could he have a leak, yes but should have a code but if you ask me, its normal.

Yeah, I'll give you the body sealing thing. But a leak in the evap system enough to smell it, and no code?

I have never smelled fuel around my car, yet when it is really cold out (below -20 C) and my fuel level gets to 1/4 tank, I get the SES light. No drivability problems, car runs perfect. I suspect this has got to be an emissions evap code (going to get it interrogated some day), again still no fuel smell!

I had a slight exhaust leak at the exhaust manifold and it made the inside of my car smell very much like gasoline. Is it possible that you are running rich and have a slight exhaust leak maybe at the manifold/header? Turned out to be my leaky EGR.

you would be surprised how much fumes are let go by the evap. if you ever hook up a evap smoke machine to your car and watch the vent soleniod...vent, you can see how much comes out. is it enough to smell, who knows but anything is possible. mine personally I can smell gas but I always though it to be exhaust fumes :\

if the charcoal canister is clogged, you may experience gas fumes. it is located in the left rear fender behind a cover. you are suppose to check it for damage and deterioration. check you gas cap. see if the gasket is dried out, damage, cracked, anything. ofcourse, if you can visually access any lines, inspect those as well. they are marked. do not over fill your tank. ofcourse stop when it clicks.

Check the gas cap. Make sure the seal is not cracked.

Also, could be the charcoal canister.

I had a gas smell years ago. A rubber hose was cracked on the EVAP system at the canister. Fixed - no more smell.
