the octane rating doesn't really determine how long, or how hot the burn is... it's just to prevent detonation... the higher the compression ratio, the higher the octane required. It's called "flash point" the temperature or pressure at which a material will combust without a source of ignition... 87 gas has a lower flash point than 93 preventing early combustion due to pressure
