  • i hate texas!!

well i went to auto zone today to find out why my SES light is on and 6 codes came up!

    2 o2 sensor codes
    egr postion sensor code
    coolant temperature sensor code
transmission code (says short circuit to battery)
o2 sensor on bank 1 code

anything i can do w/out replacing all this? cuz the cheapest thing is the coolant temp sensor and thats 15.99...anybody that dont have the emissions test should be very thankful

    Re: i hate texas!!

o2's are meant to make your car run safer (ie correct your A/F ratio...adjust fuel trims)...not so much keep them emission checked...without replacing them, or fixing whats wrong witht hem your car would begin to run like crap regardless of where you live.

coolant temp code is probably your thermo.

How can we tell you whats possibly wrong without the code numbers?

does your state have the rule that the SES light has to be off? When you get it checked just unplug the bulb

do they have those in 3's? cuz i need 2 of 3 o2's 2 codes are o2's and 1 of them is the 1 on the headers. if i did get sims what about emissions test? cuz its pointless if i cant pass inspection cuz this is mainly why i want the problems solved and SES light to go out.

that is a thought but last time i tried to inspect it they said they will check for codes too when they do the test soo if the bulb is unplugged the codes will still show up and theyll probly fail it...if it doesnt fail anyways cuz of the exhaust fumes.

I always hear people saying that the thermo can throw a code, but I've never seen this happen. Did they start doing this after the '97 firebird?

I ran no thermo for the longest and there was never a code thrown or saved on the computer. I've even had them stuck open/stuck closed and it never threw a code any.

I hear some of the features that other people's cars have on this board and I think I got the bare minimum when it comes to features on my car. :P

I have no clue when it started but it a code that says the coolant temp is below limits or whatever. I see it a lot every winter with the cold temps :)

                          Re: i hate texas!!

Well, I was always overheating, hence the reason I removed my thermostat so the water would always be flowing through (though it never really worked).

So, I don't think I would have ever had a reason for it to say that the coolant temp was below a certain limit. Maybe coolant temp being above a certain limit, but never below.

the thermo code basicly reads that it takes too long to get input i guess that means warming up?

just so ya know, as far as the 02 sensors, for the ones before and after the cat you can just get sims so long as your cat isn't clogged, that could cause plenty of other problems. I replaced my after cat o2 when I redid my exhaust. My cat was rattling for months and it never threw a code so I figured I really don't need it to tell me if my cat dies. For the one on the exhaust manifold you need to change that, it actually affects your tuning.

Now if you want a quick way out, go by autozone, have the codes cleared, go straight to the inspection shop, you should pass. but you do need to replace that manifold o2 sensor.

If your engine is cold and the car hasn't properly warmed up yet, and the guy doing the inspection doesn't realize the car needs to be to full operating temps before he scans the codes, well then you are all good.
