Hello I am new to the forums. I am looking into buying a new car and am looking at the Trans Am v8 5.7L 6-speed. I dont know if this is the right website to ask but it looked good. My question is, I have heard that Trans Ams, firebirds, ect can have alot of little problems with them constantly, is that true? Will I always need to be working on it and paying for it to get repaired? I am looking for just a nice car to have fun in, not big into racing or anything. THanks for the input.

If you have very little interest in working on and/or maintaing a high performance car then don't buy a T/A, SS, or Z28. Buy a Civic.
However, the cars that are the most fun and give the greatest driving satisfaction are Firebirds and Camaros regardless of model or year. Unquestionably the best driving bang for the buck are GM f-bodies. Nothing else quite like them.

I wanted a trans am pretty bad and started looking around and a couple that I looked at were real peices of junk, head lights inop, driver side mirror almost shaking off, speedo didnt work, interior door was pulling away from the frame, tranny shifted like crap...etc...etc..
I think it depends on how the car was treated prior to you, a couple WS6's that I looked at were pristine. The pop-up head lights and window motors are some of the culprits that most people complain about, that and oil consumption on all 5.7L. After that I sat in a z28 hurst 6 sp and fell in love, bye bye trans am, hello camaro
You might want to post over at LS1tech.com, ls1.com and camaroz28.com since they own them they could tell you a little more.

Thanks for the reply. I think I will go with a TA. And you ask why I dont get a Civic...because I wanted something fun to drive. Not a peice of plastic. And I am BIG into maintaing my car. Cleaning it and keeping up to date with checkups ect. I just know nothing about working on cars and didnt want a car so unreliable that I would have to spend an ungodly amount of money on it constantly getting it fixed. But if im good to it, hopefully itll be good to me. Anyways I think I will look for a good TA and possibly a Camaro. Thanks for the help.

In general Fbodies are great as long as you maintain them (just like any car). If you get one go for the gold..V8. My only regret when it comes to my camaro. The only problem I had with my v6 was the water pump went out..at 120,000 miles. A real fun drive too.

i garantee that the second your get your car.. and realize how fast the TA is... your gonna start doing your homework on performance for the 5.7l.. and become gearheads just like all of us on this website..
