  • Gas Gauge Jumps around, is this normal?

My gas gauge tends to change going up hills or turning certain ways, I guess it might be normal but I'd thought I'd ask. Tonight it was jumping between 1/2 adn 1/4 of a tank.

i just bought my camaro and it does it too, even when just accelerating on a flat road while underway. its probably just the sensor or whatever moving with the gas in the tank/

Thier is a gas gauge that is kind of like a floating balast (not the correct spelling) that measures the level of fuel in the tank. It's normal for your gauge it fluctuate to some degree depending on whether or not your going up hill/down or stopping hard or accelerating hard. The gas goes back and forth with the sensor. Different cars have the sensor placed in different places in the tank.

The tank is also V shaped so at 1/2 tank there is actually less than that. This also causes the gauge to go very quick bewteen 1/4 and empty.
