  • got a 2.8 that needs some fun!!!

Hey all. I got this car soley as a gift. They wanted it out of they driveway, so for the cost of a jersey title, I am now the owner of a 1988 firebird 2.8. First things first....it has a k&n filter and flomaster catback, and that is it. It got some pep, but not really...Non-posi, smokes like crazy at any speed, has 157,000 miles on it, and has exhuast leaks at the manifolds...Hood latch is broken, trunk latch is broken, no pistons work for the hood or trunk, doors sag and got the jersey cancer real bad...no tires match...lol..the list can go on for days, but those are the major concerns...Break lines are rotted out, but that is kinda easy for me to repair...

I am a buick guy at heart, having owned 5 grand nationals in 8 years, but $$$ was real tight when I got my house, so the last two GN's had to go...I cleaned out the driveway, and now this thing landed right in their spot!!!!!

I have TONS of buick stuff lying around, including several used turbochargers and other little odds and ends, so It got my gears grinding...

    First things first.....

With NO cash to find a donor car and swap out for an LT1 or better.....Is it worth rebuilding the 2.8.....I teach autoshop in a high school in jersey, and tools and a lift are never a problem, however, is the 2.8 a good engine to massively beat on? I was considering rebuilding the heads at a very cheap price at a local shop, opening them up a bit and adding some larger valves, possibly a cam if I can find one, injectors???, and of course, dropping one of my spare turbochargers on a custom exhaust manifold that I could weld up at the cost of a flange and some tubing....

My delima? can i get injectors larger than stock? Is there a chip or someone who can alter the comp for some mods like this? IS it worth it????

Heads would cost me 500 to port polish and rebuild from a close friend, with includes the valve job and springs....

Turbo is free, welding is free, and all labor would mostly be me...so? what do I do? just leave it on the side of the house till i think i can drop 5 grand into it and just do the LS1 when I have that $$$, or is it feesible to go out with a fun little project, without catostrophic failure the first time out?

    Anyone ever do this before????

    thanks so much everyone!!!

    John

i think that motor has like 120-130 hp...it would be a good daily driver, or good for a engine swap...but i wouldn't put much $$$ in to that 2.8 to beef it up...just my 2 cents

check out my sticky in thirdgen forum on internal upgrades for your six, and teh one thread, in advanced tech, on insight i the 3.4 (or is it 60* v6) that will help you decide on bigger designs for teh engine if yo so choose. The forced induction route will rest on how much power you intend to throw at it, and if you're going to do teh required build up for it.

as auto666 stated, the tranny will be your weak link.

well first off you have a 2.8, as far as that specific motor goes it's crap. I had one in my 88 jimmy. Don't rebuild it or get a rebuilt 2.8, they have the unique problems of breaking rebuilt cranks. Now something you can do is do a 3.4 upgrade. You can get a 3.4 long block and everything will bolt up, then with your turbo stuff you can go wild. That is what I wanted to do with my jimmy but bought my firebird instead.

a 3.4 only has 25 more horses than the 2.8...if your gonna swap, you might as well go all the way for a v8 or something worth the swap

take an old gn turbo, fab it up, and turn up the boost until the motor blows ;) then replace with a 3.4 or 3.8 :naughty:

well that's why I suggested the 3.4 swap, all that stuff you listed isn't a problem plus when they stroked the 2.8 out to a 3.4 they beefed up the rotating assembly which is the weak point of the 2.8. A person with good 3.4 knowledge could chime in but I believe they went to a forged crank or connecting rods or something like that.

Then you would need a custom tune but I believe there is stuff out there already which will let you turn the 2.8 into a 3.4 the only downside is you will still have that crappy throttle body injection and not the multiport of the 3.4's on the f-bodies.

                      edit:
TBI was used on the 88 jimmy, I don't know what form of Fuel Injection they gave the F-body back then.

Im not saying everyone said the 3.8 swap

and no way they had forged rods and esp not a crank in a 3.4.

well I know when they stroked the 2.8 they upgraded some internals that eliminated the broken crank issue. someone should chime in

around 85 (depending on where you look, who says it) the mains on the 2.8 increased diameter.

and yes, R.I.P. Karl. We had semi-identical 85 beigish Firebirds.
