  • Is 3 inch really just right?

Im beginning to work on my car and I have heard from some that an exhaust system with 3 inch piping is too much. I have also heard that 3 inch piping is just right. I want to start out with a 3 inch catback and 3 inch cat. Is that really going to be beneficial considering ill be spending over $400? Will I loose power and waste my money? Will I gain power and if so how much might i expect from a 95 v6 (3.8)?

You might want to try a mix-and match job. I put in a 3" cat, then afterwards the factory 2.5" pipe runs into a 3" pipe heading into the muffler, then I have dual 2.5's coming out.

first off, your factory is 2.25".
Second off, what's the use in buying a bigger cat and muffler if you're leaving the biggest crimp in the system in place?

It's a huge bottleneck. Look at it this way. You can widen the mouth of the bottle, and give it a broad bottom, but as long as the neck stays the same, it's not gonna flow ANY better.

That being said, I use a 3" cat, 3" pipe and single 3" out muffler, works just fine.
as long as you have a dual 2.5" outlet from a 3" inlet, that's fine as well.

Ok, I appreciate the responses but I dont want to be biased at all. Does anyone have any horror stories with going too big?
