  • violent shaking?

car is shaking really bad...can't figure out what it is.

symptoms: lots of rough shaking of the entire car, abnormal shifting (seems to shift harder and shifts at higher rpms), car remains at high rpms while driving, exhaust sounds kinda weird, and me and friends smelled what we thought might be burnt rubber (not sure if it has anything to do with this or not though).

anyone know what this could be? plugs/wires? tranny? or just something due to the outside conditions (even though its not super cold outside)?

    Re: violent shaking?

What year is it? How many miles on it? When is the last time you flushed your transmission fluid?

From the sounds of some of your symptoms, it seems as though you may be rather low on tranny fluid and it wouldn't hurt to drain it all out and refill/change filter.

Also, when is the last time you changed your oil? Is it due for a change?

SES light on? Has it thrown any codes? Is it misfiring?

All of your symptoms that you listed, sound like some misfires and low on tranny fluid. Even a possible clogged air filter or fuel filter.

Basically, just answer this........when is the last time the car had a tune up and what was included in this tune up?

      1994 Camaro...3.4L...+150k miles...original engine...few mods (CAI, Blaster Coils, plugs/wires, exhaust)

if i remember correctly the tranny fluid was flushed/changed in july i think.

      oil changed two weeks ago.

SES light on, but its always on...

i'm taking it to a shop next week to check things out...right now just trying to get a lock on the possibilities.

take a look at your trans mount and see if it is ripped apart or not. Or does it sound like it is an engine problem?

not 100% sure...i'm gonna pop the hood tomorrow when its light outside and check the engine bay then under the car. gonna try and check the plug wires and make sure its not that...cause that could very well be what i was smelling that night. not sure if its a tranny mount cause the shifting seems a little weird...i'm thinking more of an engine problem or something with the transmission itself.

vacuum leak? I don't really know, but the same thing was happening on my van and I know it had a vacuum leak. Does it have a noticeable loss of power? --unrelated-- Has it overheated or gotten really hot lately?

                  loss of power...yes

overheating...not really. temp shot up at first but has been normal since then.

                    Re: violent shaking?

checked under the hood and a little under the car...raining outside...

spark plug wires look fine...gave them all a tug to make sure they were rotten or anything and checked each one for burns or anything...all clear.

checking out the belts...they were shakin a little but i don't think that has anything to do with this.

started up the car and listened to it run a bit...seems almost like it may be a cat or air flow problem...the cat was shaking really bad and lots of of the vibration seemed to be comingfrom that area. engine and tranny mounts seemed ok but i'll have to wait for a clear, dry day to check them better.

this wouldn't have anything to do with the cat would it? it would explain the sound coming from the exhaust but would a bad/clogged cat cause this kind of trouble?

                      Re: violent shaking?

does it even happen when its just idling in park if thats the case make sure you fluid level regesters on the dip stick and you can preaty much rule out trany problems. its not your tranny mount thats for sure. has it slowly gotten to this point or was it an all of a suden type thing. if it was all of a sudden what was the last thing that happend before it started doing it or what was you last drive like. it really does sound like a bad miss

                            Re: violent shaking?

Sounds like a burnt valve...try not driving it much any more till you get it to the shop, or else you WILL break your engine mount (speaking from experience here, not in the 'bird but in a 4runner.) Burnt valves don't always mean the engine won't run. If you're lucky it may just be some bearings to be replaced, but if it's more than that, just have them rebuild the engine since you'll already be having to pay a teardown fee. Hope this helps.

took it to the dealer today cause it was the closest and most convenient thing to do since i'm away from home...turns out its a burnt out ignition coil, leaking coolant and oil somewhere around the lower intake, trans fluid is shot, so is the p/s fluid, and i need to run a fuel injection cleaner. said there was some carbon build up as well. guy said he would take care of it all and do some precautionary stuff to take of anything else. kinda sucks but hey...its 13 years old and this is the worst thats its ever been so maybe once this stuff is fixed it'll run better than before...at least i hope :/
