When I turn on my AC/heat I hear a squealing sound from my air compressor. Then when I turn it off it goes away. My dad says its the air compressor clutch. Would it be wise to just buy the clutch or the whole air compressor and replace it?

How hard is it? Do I need to recharge the system and all that?

    Re: Air Compressor

I have that EXACT thing going on with my ac compressor on my 2000 bird. Its a pretty hard job id say. i have not tried messing with if yet. you would have to recharge the system. i know that it would be diffiucult, but some might disagree. compressor arent that cheap either.

I just deal with if for right now. my noise will eventually lessen after i drive it awhile. I usually get it on humid or very moist days, but i have gottin it randomly.

does it make the sound constnatly or always?
    good luck to ya

      Re: Air Compressor

It may be the compressor but I would not think it is the clutch. The clutch bearing is spining when the a/c is off. When the A/C is on, the clutch pulls in and the compressor spins. If the compressor is locked up or getting had to turn then the belt may squeal. If this is the case you will need to replace the compressor.

yeah, if the clutch is worn, you can replace the clutch which does not require evacuating or recharging the system but if your compressor is locked up, you need a new one plus some other things

Well the heat and AC work just fine. But that annoying noise comes on EVERYTIME I turn it on.

Anyone know a good place to get a air compressor? Around here they want like 400 bucks at autozone.

I would buy a brand new AC Delco.

Re manufactured units, even AC Delcos, consistently never last past their warranty. now you may be thinking cool, I'll just warranty it...but, there are more costs to the whole situation than just the compressor.

Where can I find one at a reasonable price? (AC/DELCO)

I would check GM Parts Direct online. I would also call around dealerships to find the best price and also any automotive air conditioning stores around. There is one in my city that sells brand new ones usually cheaper than the dealerships.
