How do I reset the computer on my 98 3.8? Can it even be done?

Im not sure how long but I think you unplug the battery for a certain amount of time 5, 8, 10 minutes. The computer resets and all the sensors relearn everything.

I believe it's 20 minutes and it'll reset everything. Or, you could take it to AutoZone or Advanced Auto and have your codes erased; I'm assuming that's what you're doing.

Cool, Thanks. I'm having problems with gas in my oil and thick white smoke coming from the exhaust that reaks of fuel. I read on another forum that resetting the computer may fix it of it is a stuck injector. I'm just hoping it's not a head gasket. I don't think it is since I don't have oil in my coolant or coolant in my oil.

          AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

you can not reset our computers. thats on old car trick that really no longer works. you can also not fix a stuck injector by resetting JACK. white smoke is water. just so you know.

fuel would be black smoke. oil is grayish blue and water is white...like steam.

Usually when I work on my stereo system I unhook the negative battery cable and later on when Im finished I put it back on and my SES lights are off. Guy at the shop said the computer relearns everything at the sensors. Srry 98 red I thought thats how you did it.

like blldogg said that doesnt really work...i use to do that and the light will go away then when i get it scanned sure enough the codes are still there.... some autozons and advance auto will not reset your codes for you becuase they say its illegal...but some guys are real cool and after having some converstation they will erase them for you.

So, if it is water causing the white smoke, why does it smell like pure gas, and how do I make it stop? I'm afraid to drive the car anywhere to get it checked for fear of severe damage to the engine. I know for sure that it isn't a head gasket. I drained my oil yesterday and found nothing but oil and gas in it, I also drained my radiator and found nothing but the orange dexcool. I know my rear main has a minor leak but that shouldn't cause the issues I'm having. Last night after I had changed the oil and coolant, I started the car and it smoothed out for a minute, then started running really rough, and the SES light started blinking again. Not as much white smoke this time, but still smoking. Any ideas?

Dude, you really need to get the codes read. If we had some codes to go by then we could offer some help.

you could also just have a bad miss and not be getting fire to some cylinders, this could be caused by bad wires, plugs, coils or other ignition issues. No spark means no compustion and will make you dump gas

a flashing ses means you have a misfire, scan the codes and it will tell you what cylinder, this will help you to narrow the problem, now if it's a random misfire, well then time to get to diagnosing.

                        Re: How do I....

White smoke was the end of the line for me...I had the exact same problems you have, with the white smoke and the extreme smell. Is it like there is a white cloud behind you when you are driving down the street? If so DO NOT DRIVE IT! I couldn'tdiagnose the problem either - no oil in the coolant, no coolant in the oil..but it started to get worse over time, until i noticed that my colant WAS mixing with my oil, just not at a huge rate..but it was too late, my car had already given up...wouldn't start at all. Long story short, a month and 3 /12 grand later, i have a new 3.8 in my camaro. It wasn't the head gasket either, I want to say my mechanic said it had something to do with my intake. just watch out, drive it as little as possible.

Don't know if this is the same problem, just a warning. you should really get it scanned.
