    Re: idle is alil high....why?

man im late but i did find a few leaks fix the high creep in idle but not the steady idle...its still high...1100-1200 i have no time to fix it but i will try....anyway i though you need a tool to set the idle screw.....and i heard it was actually not good to mess with that.

OK i have some time to work on the car ...ses light came on so if i cannt scan it myself with some free software im trying them i have no choice the to baby it to a shop and get it scanned.....but before i do what

does anybody know how to check the tps with a volt meter?

is there a post or article on how to properly adjust your idle screw?

and just for the record....i dont think i have a leak because i have sprayed a ton of starter fluid and rpms stay the same so far new plugs, wires, o2s....iac(but took it back since it did nothing), seafoam, alternator test and battery charged.

I was under the impression that the idle was 100% controlled by the IAC valve. Where is the screw?

I am having what I think is the same issue. My idle would race up to 2k-3k rpms erratically. I have a cabled throttle. I thought it was just simply get caught up somewhere, but i checked and it isn't. I have checked for a vac leaks and none to be found. Not only is it frustrating, it's embarrasing to pull up at a light or drive through a parking lot and everyone stare at you coz the engine is racing.

ok guys i bought a actron cp9145 obd 1 and obd2 scanner and it rocks(205 shipped with all the cables and cd)....works on my impala obd2 and camaro obd1 ....the codes where 35 and 36....

            one being the iac
second being something about loss of 24 signal.......im trying to luck them up but i went ahead and erased the codes to see if any where old

i allready had swapped the iac and it didnt help so i put the old one back....but ill see what codes come up and ....any thoughts let me know...especially on the loss of signal one.

              Re: idle is alil high....why?

              36
Ing system problem loss of 24x sensor signal

              35
Idle air control cant set idle rpm.

i cant find a more detail desription....i think code 35 is caused by a vacuum leak wich i think is the gaskets...so o well i have to take the whole thing apart and redo it....
put i have no clue what code 36 is....any body know if there is a sticky or something with obd I code definition.

                  MAF system
                  DIS system

I would like to know what year/model car it is

I'm guessing then its either MAF system or DIS system.

dont have a maf so can you explain though why you think its the DIS...actually i have a small definition of the code but sometimes they have a detailed description of what the code is ....that is what im trying to find but no luck.

ok guys this is really starting to get on my nerves.....someone told me to check the crank sensor behind the harmonic balancer because it provides a 24x signal to the ecm....and i check and it sure does.....i went ahead and took the crank position senor out looks good and when i check it with a ohm meter it was pretty much the same as the brand new unit i bought...so i dont want to put in the new one because im guessing the old one is still good....however im going to follow the wires and see if anything unusaual(sp) is visible.....

                          the sensor sounds good right?

however does any one know how to check if you have a good ground with a meter?

It would not hurt to check your PCV valve. This is sometimes overlooked by the best. It may be leaking crankcase vacuum through that area if the valve is defective. Just a thought. Let us know the results when you find the cause. Good luck!

For a consistent high idle I would still check that IAC valve, since you cannot find any vacuum leaks. On a previous car, when the IAC died, the idle stayed at a steady 1100 rpm. The idle speed could theoretically be anywhere, it just depends on what position the pintle is at when the IAC motor dies. I got a different IAC at the junkyard for $2 and it fixed the problem. Once I knew the IAC was the issue, then I spent the money on a new one from the parts store.

                                Re: idle is alil high....why?

i dont think its the iac because i had bought a brand new one and swapped it in and nothing happen....so i just put my old one back....and it does have a new pcv valve......i even swapped out my crank position sensor and it seem to run even more ruff....however it though my year did not have to have the ecm relearn for the new sensor bought i need to make sure.

i think i did find a vacuum leak so right now as we speak the entire top end is taken apart once again....question

what silicone (rtv) do you guys recomend to use with the upper/lower intake gaskets to make sure they dont leak?

actually my lower intake gaskets does not look bad at all keep in mind they have been on the car for no more than a couple of months.
