  • Changing my oil tomorrow....

Title says its all, anyways I purchased the car back on August 24th, 2006 at 140,181 and did my first oil change at 141,741 miles. I used Royal Purple 10w30 and the guy said due to my miles and the visocity of the oil I needed to switch to 10w30(was it 40 before)? Anyways what is the reason for that.....and should I purchase 10w30 again? My car is a few hundred miles from kissing the 150k mark so yeah a change of oil & filter is due asap. Thank you guys.

Only thing I could find on the internet was what the weights mean.....So exactly why do I want a thicker/thinner(to w/e stock is) due to my miles? I'll go ahead and buy the 10w30 I just would like to know why. I love to learn this stuff, and i'm sure others would too.

I do appreciate the response though BLLDOGG

look in your manual (if you have one)
It will say use 10w-30 if you have a 3.8

most likely will say 5w30 but it doesn't matter. I agree that you should look in your manual and see what oil viscosity you are suppose to use. I don't know why he would want you to. there is no telling what goes through the auto part guys. I am kind of confused on what you are saying and what he said but if he was recommending a thicket oil, maybe he was thinking that a thicker oil might do better in a more worn engine. either way, use whats in your manual.

You live in a cold climate in the winter, then use 10w30. It's a thin oil and flows better at cold startups.
10w40 is a bit thicker and is primarily used for warm-summer months.

              I realized I didn't mention what car I have..lol

              1995 Pontiac Firebird 3.4 V6 5 Speed Manual

From my understanding of viscosity is the "thickness" of the oil, so i'm guessing he was saying I needed a thicker oil(10w30?) I'm in a mixed weather area, it gets pretty cold/hot. I'll stick with 10w30 I guess.

so you went almost 8k miles with out changing your oil?

any way it doesnt really matter what you use. if it's cold use 10w30 if not just use 5w30

Royal Purple you can run for 12k miles....

Although since this is my first "change" swapping over to Royal i'm changing it at 8k. Plus I just plan on changing it every 10k miles for now on so since its kissing 150k soon remember 160k and 170k and so on will be easy to remember.

Technically the oil Might last 12k miles... (depending on Total Load of the engine and condition of engine, as well as condition of your environment)
Mobil 1 Extended is Supposedly 15k miles...
But your oil filter only lasts 3k!
                      Therefore it seems a waste

supposidly, oil filters are suppose to last more than 1 oil change. Not something I would recommend and I'm sure is just some backyard BS but anyways....crazy huh

I always replace the oil filter when I change the oil.
