  • Surging on hills

On the way to work this morning I was climbing a couple hills. I was going slow, around 35 MPH, and the torque converter was locked up. The entire way up both hills the car was bucking and surging. Any ideas what this is? My only thought is that it could be the torque converter going bad. It ran perfect except for on the hills, so I don't think it's an engine problem.

More info...I am confused now. It isn't just on hills. It did it on a flat road too. It surges/jerks when it is in 4th gear and very low engine speed, less than 1800 RPM. If I give it just enough gas to accelerate so it stays in 4th, it starts doing the surging.

sounds like some misfiring or arching going on pobraly about time for a tuneup for you.

No codes. I just changed the plugs last month but it still has the original wires. 55K on the clock.

Yeah, I would say the wires are the culprit... mine went out at about 55k too.

I suggest changing the wires every time you do plugs on our cars... they're relatively cheap ($60 a set for good ones, less for... well, cheaper ones) and our cars love to eat them.

So basically it sounds like a misfire. If it is a misfire, how come it only happens at very low RPM's? Is that a typical first sign? I wonder if going to Autozone for the free scan might tell me something.

Ya, i would deffentially say its your wires. Pobally some kind of arching going on. I would say lower due to you not being in the powerband yet, but if you got WOT your going to feel it like crazy.

Last night I floored it a few times. It felt fine, took off like a rocket. But a couple times I heard a slight popping sound, almost like a faint backfire. It seems that's more evidence in favor of changing wires.

I don't have a second gear start button. I have ACS (traction control), which only causes that when spinning the tires.
