• instrument bulb replacement?dangerous?

Hey guys I need your help,
I brought my car in for service today and well after giving a list of a few things I needed fixed, I was told that replacing the bulb that was burnt out behind my fuel gauge in the instrument panel was not covered under my warrentee and that it would cost about 100 dollers to fix. So I asked if Its easy to fix myself and the service employee said I HAVE to use static proof gloves and that I could easily set the air bag off trying to fix this. Is this the case? And if not does anyone know the easiest way to replacing a bulb back there? Its really ennoying so sooner I get it fixed sooner my attitude towards my dealer drops.
Thanks,
Matt

Just make sure to disable the airbag system but removing the fuses and such for it just in case. AS far as being hard I haven't personally done it but from other people's work I've heard it is fairly easy just be gently and nice and easy with taking it off, you don't want to break anything on your dash or the panels itself. Get a service manual, like a Haynes or such and it should tell you the bolt type and size and everything you need to know. Do a search on the board, someone has posted about this many times before.

Well guys I did a search and couldn't find much at all. I thought i have read a "how to" thread on this before but I guess not. If any of you guys have done this before could you give me a brief description on how to take care of this.
Thanx
Matt

Its very easy. Definitely not worth $100 in labor.

And please do me a favor and kick the guy who told you that he had to wear "static gloves".... what a moron

Basically, you start by undoing the plastic part underneath the sterring wheel. After that comnes off, you'll see the other screws to take off the speedo cluster itself. After you pull out the whole speedo cluster, the bulbs are in the back of it, just twist and pull them out. If you want to change the color of the backlight (mine's red) now is a good time to do it.

You can do this yourself man. All you need is a 8mm (?) ratchet and some patience.

Hope this helps... :D
