• FYI: Fuel System Problem

Well, I just had an opportunity with my fuel system.

The symptoms were as follows:
* engine is hard to start and requires open throttle to start cold
* engine misfires for up to 15 seconds after ignition
* car intermittently emits clouds of white smoke upon ignition and during WOT operation
* fuel odor detected in AC vents, exhaust and engine compartment
* fuel detected in throttle body
* intermittent rough idle
* fuel residue on fuel rail and intake in injector 4 & 6 proximity
* poor gas mileage

Diagnostics revealed:
* no DTC codes in computer
* fuel pressure was 48 psi at key-on and a steady 45 psi engine running (tested at idle to 4000rpm).
* fuel pressure dropped to 32 psi in 5 minutes after key-off.
* ignition module and coils OK
* pulse detected at all injector terminals
* all injectors respond to pulse test.

... so, I figure i've just got a couple of bad o-rings and maybe a leaking injector and a small intake leak ... and I think: "Hey, this is a great time to install those new 24# injectors"

What I found when I began disassembly:
The fuel pressure regulator was blown. The MAP housing was getting a 15psi spray of fuel through the FPR vacuum line at idle along with fuel seepage into the intake after key-off. The white smoke was unburned fuel evaporating in the exhaust system from time-to-time. Fortunately, there were no bad injector o-rings or intake leaks. However, the temp regulator on the AC control is screwed because of fuel contamination in the vacuum control manifold.

Anyhow, the new injectors and FPR are installed ... and LIFE IS GOOD AT THE UNDERPASS!!! ... KLEEN YO WINDOWS [(c) Microsoft] FO SUM CHAINJ!
2001 Kroger\'s shopping cart
MODS-
* disabled locking wheel
* used Flowmaster and some LS1 parts ... I think there\'s an old Bilstein shock in there too.
