  • Bad Coil Pack???

My car has an intermittent misfire. When it happens the car will hardly move. It happened today and I opened the hood to take a look. I was tapping around by the coil packs and the misfire stopped. I really think it has a bad coil pack but I do not know which one. This is a 93 Firebird 3.4L which had OBDI. The check engine light does not work. Is there a way to figure out which coil pack it is?

If I get an OBDI scanner does that just flash the check engine light or does that actually give me the codes?

    Thanks...

pull the plug wires off 1 coil pack at a time (make sure you shut it off first or you will shoch the crap out of you self). thats how i found it on mine.

Coils are notorious for going out on 3.4's and 3.8's. I replace at least one coil every 3 months or so.

How hard are they to change? Do they just come off by removing the 2 screws that I see on each side of them. It looks like the one on the bottom could be a bit of a pain to get the screws out.

they may go out frequently but as often as you all are describing it I would say you have another problem.

My car has 132,000 miles on it and they appear to be the originals. It has not acted up since yesterday morning so I am going to keep an eye on it and when it happens again I will try to figure out which one it is.

Easy, take off the 2 plug wires (they can be a pain) and keep note of which post they go to. Unscrew 2 screws, pull the coil off, set new coil on and snug the screws up. Replace the spark plug wires and you are good to go

you're right. Tech shouldnt have a coil only last a max of 3 months

As previously mentioned, my check engine light does not work. I do not know why. Will either of these OBD 1 scanners pull the codes for my car, or do these scanners just flash the check engine light. I need a way to pull the codes without having to rely on the C/E light.

It means your coils should last longer than a maximum of 3 months.

I suspect something else is wrong to make the coils only last less than 3 months.

Strange. My grandma's grand am is always in the shop for a missfire, usually coils and she has a 3800. I remember in a thread a while back a lot of other's have coils go bad frequently.
