Which is better when running the 1/4 mile, an A4 with a shift kit or a M5??? I know it has a lot to do with the driver's skill, but I'm curious what the pro's and con's of each are.

On fbodys this gets complicated by the fact most autos have 3.42 rear gears, and most manuals 3.23.
But, forgetting about that, autos are easier to get off the line, and manuals put more power down at the top end. Even a good driver prefers an auto for handicap (or dial your own or bracket or index) racing, because they're more consistent, but, with equal gearing, a good driver can be faster with a manual, heads-up.2000 Firebird convert, chameleon/tan, M5, Y87, TCS, BMR tower brace and panhard, KBDD sfcs, 245/50-16 GSCs -
Bob, I know you know this but most autos have 3.08 gears. i agree if you want fun stick with the m5 or m6
autos are great off the line, but as we all know the auto thats gmc make are not up to snuff
if your taking it to the track i would say auto
simply because if you slip or miss a gear on a manual it could means your eninges buttComment

i've driven auto all my life...my 'maro is my first stick & i love it. bought a winter beater with a stick as well [img]smile.gif[/img]
driving pleasure & fun = stick
consistancy @ the track = auto
look @ the timeslip page...there are fast sticks & fast autos as well...really up to what you perfer driving, imho.

I made it to top 12 out of 200+ cars my first time bracket racing and I had a stck [img]smile.gif[/img]
You can be consistant in a stick jsut need practice...
I prefer stick...
built in shift kit, variable stall converer(anything you want and it gives you more control on a autocrossing course...Comment

Autos aren't that great for REAL track racing (road course not drag), manual is defenitely better on the road course. You can choose ur RPMs better and can come out of corners better and such.

If you had two equal camaros or firebirds with the same HP at the crank and both with the same ratio of gears, and a driver that knows how to drive a stick. The Manual would win. Autos lose more HP/torque through the drivetrain. As for 1/4 mile times, a stick can be just as good as an auto for bracket racing. When I had my 96 Camaro(stick), and was able to go to the drags twice a week, I could pull a 16.2 all day long. Just takes practice. Could I do it now, nope I only hit the track twice in 2003. I work to damn much now. :( Soon though, I'll hopefully have a different job and 2004 will be different. :D
Also, as for the gears. An auto with 3.42 is pretty much the same as a Manual with 3.23.

Actually, I was stupid. Those are the gears with Y87 I think.
