• HELP! Belt issue!

Over the last few weeks Ive been noticing a whirring noise coming from the engine but I couldnt pinpoint what it was. Today I started my car and immediately there was a high pitch shrieking coming from under the hood. Well, I pulled my belt off and spanked my car. Then I pulled the fan belt off ( ;) ) and looked first at the tensioner pulley. First I noticed a big piece of plastic that apears to be peices of belt that got really hot and melted together and was wrapped around the non-moving shaft near the pulley. Then I noticed that the pulley would not spin at all. The belt was just rubbing over it...so that is what the noise was.

My question: How do I fix this? Can I repair the pulley or do I need to buy a new one? How do I go about replacing it?

Thanks a bunch guys. Even though I don't hang out here anymore, i know I can trust you all to help anyone in an emergency (this being an emergency cause I need to go to work tonight.)

the tensioner pully wouldnt spin at all? taht should spin freely. The bearing could be totally shot inside i suppose. Its a veery easy replacement.

I HAVE A WORD OF CAUTION!!!!!! i did this a while ago on mine. the tensioner assembly itself isn't hard to put on(but it is expensive) get it from your local pontiac dealer. but heres where you need to be careful!!!!! when you pull the assembly off be very careful of the plastic coolant elbows. they have little o-rings in them and if you rip the o-rings they are a ***** to get out of the hole and well ruin your whole day. it will drian your radiatior of coolant in a couple of minutes of driving time. be very careful and good luck!!!

Try just the pulley first, then you dont' need to remove the assembly and it's super quick. The pulley is really cheap too...

          Good luck.

raven- when i went to the dealership and asked for the pulley they said you had to have the whole assembly and you couldn't get just the pulley? then again the daelership near me doesn't have the best reputation either.

OMG.......so I got the pulley $10 at Autozone.

Man, what I thought was the pulley was just the bearing. The belt was resting on the bearing! The piece of plastic that I thought was pieces of belt was really the plastic pulley in question which had completely melted when the bearing siezed.

I replaced the thing in about 3 minutes flat and the belt actually wasnt bad at all.

              Thanks for the help!

NEVER go to the dealership for anything unless it's warranty work and expensive

I live in Canada and we have a general car part store called Part Source...thats where i got mine. I'm sure places like Autozone are equivalent for you... I paid $20 canadian for a tensioner pulley for my 97.

                I hope that helps...

Ya i figured it was the just the pully itself, it woulnd't be a very likely thing your whole assembly would go to crap.
