I am thinking you have a bad ground. Had a friend with a pickup he drove it to the woods with no problem, gets back in it to go home and nothing. They drug it back to a bud of his house and after an hour called me. We went back, stopping at autozone to get a few things and it turned out to be a bad ground. This is the wire that runs from the battery to either the engine block or frame or both. He had the same symptoms as you. No radio, no lights no nothing. I'd check that first. Follow the wires coming from the battery and make sure they are tight on the other end/ends.

The grounds are tight. is there a chance that the wire itself is bad? I have had a few ppl tell me it sounds like a short somewhere, anyone know how to find and fix that short

With a ground tester(12v light bulb with wires), which you can buy cheap at Walmart, conect one lead to the positive post on your battery, and the other to your engine block/body. If the bulb lights, the ground is good. Check that first. That's really important.

yep what he said, finding a short is going to be a ***** if you have no power.

Are you sure your battery is not bad, if it sat on a charger, then you tried to start the car it would not work. YOu can jump a car, run the car for a whole tank at high RPMs, and the Battery will still not hold enough charge to start the car. I am sure this is your problem, I cannot think of what else could all of sudden and coicidentally happen when your car just sits there.

Try Jumpin your car with another car it will probably work, if it doesn't you are in the clear.

yep.. if you get no light then either the batt is bad or the ground is bad.. and yes the wire can go bad.. espically if some moisture gets into a nick in the insulation or something like that.. as we all know rust don't conduct like good ole clean metal!

And you can even test your battery with the ground tester to make sure it is good. Just connect a lead to each post (+ and -) and it will light up if there is charge. Also, it will light up even if the charge is low enough to stop your car from starting. Jump it to check it. If it jump starts and you shut if off and it wont start again, it's the battery. Your car will actually run for a while off of the alternator.

I don't know if this is the same problem, I sort of scanned through the posts, but when I had my ranger, my batt cable when bad and I had power to turn on everything like the stereo and gauges and such, and when I went to start it, nothing, everything was dead. It turned out that my cable had corrosion through out the whole thing, i got a new cable and no problem.

so nothing on with the jump? Then its something other then the battery. I guess check your wires out, I had my alternator wire connector corroded out on me.

Also for the record, if your alternator is fine, as long as you jump the car, then you can run with a bad battery, battery jsut holds enough power to crank, the motor, and run fuel-pump anmd ignition, then it switches over to the alternator.

I'm thinking too. My Grand Prix just crapped out like this, only I have power to everything, just clicks. Even swapped in the battery from the 'bird & still the same thing

check for power at your fuse block in the car first if there is no power there check the wire that runs power to the fuse block mouse or something might have chewed it up.
