  • did I discover a free Fan mod?

when I took my valve covers and all off I accidently broke the plastic part off hte connector to the xoolant sensor in the intake manifold. I drove a few days with it unhooked bfore I picked up a new sensor to put in. As soon as I started the car, the cooling fan was on. And the guage worked. I knew ther were 2 sensors, I jsut did not know which was which. one on the cylinder head goes to the guage, one in the intake manifold goes to the PCM.

Jsut thought I would inform you guys, I made one with a switch form autozone, and it worked I noticed no noticeable changes in ETS, jsut a drain on my battery in the staging lanes.

Are you 100% sure it's a coolant temp sensor? (not doubting you, just verifing one of my theories ;) )

I've never heard of an ECT sensor in the intake manifold. It sounds like you broke the MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor.

I imagine this would cause all sorts of problems on an OBD-II system! :(

I would find someone with a Diacom cable and plug it into the PCM & laptop to find out if it's causing any problems.

remeber I have a 3.4L I am 100% sure its a coolant sensor, I read up there are 2 coolant sensors, one for the PCM, one for the Guage, the one on the intake manifold is the one to the PCM, the sensor itself sits in the coolant. Also its the same place the collant sensor on my 85 2.8L camaro was.

I think since it cannot get a reading on when to turn on the fan it is "fooled" to jsut make it run.

yes, I broke the same bastard during my head swap.
it is a coolant sensor. But not the gage one, cause my gage still worked too, fans stayed on though.

Thats right theres one for the guage and one for the PCM, but you need to fix or the pcm will be wacked, thinking the car is always cold, or always hot? causing hard starts and running rich.
