  • antifreeze GREEN or RED

    97 camaro, using red type antifreeze. Ok for those of you who dont know this type of antifreeze is very corrosive. If you dont beleve me spill some under the hood and look at that area in a few days. Whats this doing to my engine? Would it be a good idea if i flushed my system and went back with green type?

    They both do the job, there is alot of bad stuff going around on the orange stuff. Some people like one some people like the other. THe problem is the orange stuff dones't last 100k like said. It should be changed almost as often and thats why people get crazy slude buildup.

    I just run what my car comes with stock, just keep up on your car and there is noithing to worry about.

      It should be dex-cool (orange in there) I have no idea why red would be in it. I would flush it and put Peak Global. That way if some different color is left behind you won't have a problem.

          Get the red $hit out of your car ASAP.
          If the class action law suit against GM for how crappy that stuff is ever gets settled, hopefully they will have to stop using it. It doesn't last 100K, it doesn't last 50K, I think it spoils like milk.

          Green all the way.

              you're in texas, you should be running about 75% water, 25% coolant. Change to that and you'll be good.

              I ran 75/25 in my V6 and it was great. BUT, you need the 25% of red stuff because even though it looks all gritty, it's actually a rust inhibitor. But what do I know...

                I have run green stuff in other cars with no rust problems. Its when you only run water you get problems.

                  Technically, if you're running DISTILLED (water with no minerals/contaminents) water in a CLOSED system, no rust will occur. However, that's only in a perfect scenario and would never happen.

                  As far as rust problems, of course rust will only occur in iron, as aluminum doesn't rust. while you may not SEE the rust in the coolant, chances are it will be rusted deep within. ANyhow that's not important, not trying to argue.

                    The green stuff has silicates in it whereas the orange/red does not. It is stated to never run green in a Dex-cool designed car because the silicates will ruin the water pump. You may not have had problems but you should stick with what the factory recommends. I have had no problems with the Dex-cool getting nasty as long as you maintain it properly. Any coolant will sludge up if you never change it.

                      I have had the heads off, they looked fantastic, so does the block inside the water jackets.

                      I lost 1 water pump on Dex-cool.
                      Switched to green stuff right after that, has been fine since.

                      The green stuff doesn't sludge up like dex-cool.
                      Dex cool starts to degrade into what looks EXACTLY like oil in your coolant. Makes everything gross, and can ruin radiators.

                        I am happy with both. I had factory dex cool in until a few months ago(i put hosewater in which instantly chunked up) and then did a flush and now have green prestone in there.

                          I actually bought five ~1~ gallon containers of distilled water and mixed 50/50 of it with the dexcool...twice, and I still got that brown sludge a month or so after changing it. I went to green antifreeze, and absolutely zero problems ever since. It took quite a few hours to flush the brown mud out, but it was worth it! I went through about 5 to 7 gallons of the green pre-mixed 50/50 coolant to finally get the dexcool totally out of the system.

                          Some say that it was because I used tap water with the dexcool the first time I changed it, but I started having the brown goo problems even when the car was new with less than 7,000 miles on it...?

                              When flushed my fluid i would let it warm up (my 180 stat was left in) andi could feel the stat open and let the fluid circulate and the chunks were there even after i did that.
