haha. I know but it's exactly what my water pump was doing.
Do you not watch your temp gauge?
A cracked head is NOT a direct result of a dripping water pump. If the water pump was in back enough shape that water was not moving and the car's temp went WAY to high, you could have cracked a head / blown a head gasket. You should have had an idiot light come on long before something like that happened though.
Woah boy calm down now lol. All the info is here so please read it. Either way, what you said made it sound like "My water pump was leaking and it cracked my heads!"
In reality, your situtaion is not really similar at all.
The reason your head gasket blew out is, like I said, you didn't pay attention to the temp guage. Your water pump was not moving coolant, because it was leaking, so your temp went way up, and you blew the head gasket. Had you paid attention to the temp and pulled over when it got that high, you would have been fine.1997 Cayenne Red Metallic Camaro
3.8 V6 M5
SLP Cold Air Intake
Ceramic Coated Pacesetter Headers
Flowmaster American Thunder Catback
Full 3.42 & Disc Break Rear End Swap

So anyway, as I was driving to the tire place, the temp gauge starting going up abnormally..up to about 230 when I finally got there and turned the car off. I made sure to tell the guys there not to drive the car any more than needed becasue of the issues it was having. On the way back from the tire place as I was approaching the mechanic, the temp gauge started soaring up to the 240 range so as I was cruisin about 40 mph and only 1/10 of a mile from the shop, I turned the car off and just coasted in. Sorry for leaving that out of the main topic.http://www.cardomain.com/id/kefkafloyd
Red 1997 Pontiac Firebird 3.8L A4 w/ Y87

But my main point was that people should know that a leaky waterpump can be a sign of other things wrong with the engine, as was in my case.
And you are wrong about thinking that I'm some ****ing idiot. I watch my temperature gauge all the time, and since I bought the car 3 years ago with 73,xxx I have kept it well maintained. But you would have known this if you would had taken the time to read the link I gave you. And please show me where I said that a cracked head is a direct cause of a blown head gasket... I said that it turned out to be a cracked head after the mechanic ran some tests.

My water pump was leaking as your's was. Took it to a mechanic to a get a new one. Turns out after he installed the new water pump he ran some tests and determined I had a cracked head or bad head gasket.

I bought the car in early 2001 with 73k on it and I've kept it up pretty well. Admitally I do drive a little hard, but I don't beat on it too bad. I always warm it up properly etc.
I KNOW you are not saying that when your water pump leaks, it cracks your head(s). All I'm saying is, that you seem to point fingers at your water pump right away when you find out your head is cracked. While it is true that because the water pump didn't move enough coolant to keep the engine cool, you should not have kept driving it when you saw the temp go so high, which is what will crack your heads / blow your head gaskets.
I'm not trying to start a flame war here, I'm just trying to make what I was saying clear and you are taking it as a person attack on you.1997 Cayenne Red Metallic Camaro
3.8 V6 M5
SLP Cold Air Intake
Ceramic Coated Pacesetter Headers
Flowmaster American Thunder Catback
Full 3.42 & Disc Break Rear End Swap

The water pump is design to leak when it fails. That's how you know its gone bad. There's a small weep hole on the underside of the pump where the water drips out.

what entails a water pump 'going bad'? it still pumped fine......just the seals start to go or what?

In general, one of two things usually causes water-pump failure. The first is when the pump's shaft's bearings wear out. Squealing and whining usually foreshadow the bearings' ultimate demise. The other scenario is seal failure. This causes coolant to leak from the pump's "weep" hole. Coolant drips that can't be traced to the radiator hoses, overflow tanks or the thermostat housing often originate at the water pump's gaskets.~Derrick My Webpage
\'96 3.8L V6 M5 Firebird Y87 | 162.8 RWHP / 196.7 RWTQ
• SLP CAI • Y87 Package - 3.23s • 180º thermo w/ fan switch • TB spacer from DEE
1991 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4x4

i was able to trace it to seal failure, but had no idea there was a weep hole. know i know....
