why is my low oil light stay on all the time? and yes i check it all the time and its always good. also my oil psi likes to fluctuate on the gauge, i use thick oil 20w50-was reccomende on a post here and that helps. is this a sign of it being time for an oil pump?help! 1994 3.4L auto

The low oil light is an indicator of the oil level, not the oil pressure. You probably have a bed sensor or a broken wire going to the sensor. The sensor is mounted in the side of the oil pan.
Also, 20w50 is too heavy. You should be running thinner oil, like 10w30.
if i run thinner oil it makes my psi drop very very low unless im on the gas. i was told the thicker oil helpes keep the psi up-and it does. what i was asking is if you think id need a new oil pump-my low oil light is a seperate matter i understand -its just another problem i had i was asking about

No problem. If 20w50 works for you then stick with it. It could be a weak oil pump, could also be a faulty gauge. How many miles on engine? Do you live in a warm climate or a cold one? I don't know if I would change the oil pump.
There is another trick and it works very well. When you change your oil add 4 quarts of 20w50 and 1 bottle of Lucas Oil Treatment. The Lucas Oil Treatment is very thick and will really help the oil pressure, but be careful in very cold weather because it is very thick stuff.
i live in indiana been cold lately-gauge rises when you hit the gas but when idling reads like 20 psi. how bad is it to remove the oil pump? ive changed one before on a truck. . . .
My low oil light is on frequently and it isn't low either. I was told that because it used to leak oil, the sensor was covered in oil or something and got messed up. I don't know how easy it is to swap out..since it's in the pan, probably not too easy. Anyway, i heard that from a guy at a shop, so it might be BS.
I would first replace the oil pressure sending unit. Thats on the side of the oil pan. It's not all that hard to get to, though if you can't get a wrench on it, it requires a special socket to take off. You can buy one for less than $10 at any auto parts store. this sensor could be going out, thus causing the light to come on unnecessarily.
If you need to run 20W50 in your engine, just to keep oil pressure, you have a much bigger problem. An oil pump is a pain in the a** to change. you have to pull the oil pan, which requires you to at least partially remove the engine from its mounts.
Whats the mileage on the engine?

also if youre having a problem with low oil pressure the main or rod bearings could scored and on their way out, worst case scenario but plausible and if you have the pan off you may want to check them

guys, oil pressure has squat to do with level. His light is for level. stop freaking people about talking about bearings.
I would say like probably mentioned, check wires coming from sensor, on side of pan. if wires look good and dry, replace sensor. cheapest and best bet of fixing the problem. also, if the wires are covered in oil from a leak, that is your most likely problem and will cause same problem with new sensor over time. a detail some people just do not understand.
while thats not good mileage, its not that bad for our engines.. 3.4's seem to hold up rather well and quite a few run up to 200k miles, if taken care of.
with that said. if it wasnt taken care of, that kinda mileage could signify other internal problems. stuff could just be wearing out. replace the sensor, and go from there. but like i said before, you should not have to run 20W50 just to keep oil pressure.
let us know what the sensor does and if it helps. good luck man..
