Hey guys, been around these forums for a while, but haven't posted in a long time. Well, I need your help again.
The "Low Oil" light came on. Prior to this, the low oil light has never come on. Now it just comes on sporadically at startup. I know I have enough oil because I just checked it prior to and after the light came on. My oil pressure is fine too. The car does not have any incidences where it leaks or burns oil that I know of. The car sounds, acts, and drives normal. I've done some searching on the forums and it seems to be that the oil level sensor switch is probably at fault.
Some things I want to have clarified:
I know that the sensor is plugged into the oil pan around the driver's side. I haven't actually seen it myself yet because I'm at my college apartment and I don't have any jacking equipment or a garage to work in. I'll have to wait until I get home during Spring Break.
1.) Is there any way to test if the sensor is really dead, other than buying a new one and putting it in to see if it makes difference? I know this is possible for things like an O2 sensor where you can test the resistance between some of the contact/leads and see if it is within a nominal value.
2.) Since this module is plugged into the oil pan, I should probably replace this during the next time I change my oil, after I drain the oil, so nothing spills out when I remove the module correct?
I know the part costs around $30-$35 from autoparts stores as members of this forums says it goes for around that much. Anyone know how much a direct replacement from GM would cost... say at a dealership? I also know to make sure I get the oil level sensor/switch and not the oil pressure sensor/switch. Any other things I should know?
I'll try to take pictures of the location of the sensor and maybe the sensor itself when I get around to changing it out since no one seems to have them yet.
The car is a 2001 camaro with about 52,000 miles BTW.
