• what oil?

I got a 97 camaro about a month ago and I need to change the oil. I have no idea what kind of oil is in it now, or how long it has been since it was changed, but it has an oil leak. So what kind of oil should I use?

First thing you want to do is get that oil leak checked out and fixed. As far as oil goes, my friends and I all run synthetic oil. Brand preference is up to you. We all use Mobil One. But one of my friend's father likes to used Quaker State. Synthetic supposedly is better for the engine. All I know is, that I can go a little longer between oil changes.

The most common leak on these cars is the Rear Main seal. So, chances are thats your leak. Its a ***** to fix, so unless you are losing more than a drop or 2 a day, its no big deal.

As for oil, I dunno. Now-a-days, Most cars recomend 5W-30 for most applications. I myself run 10w-30, all year long. Unless winters start getting REALLY cold here in wisconsin, I won't be changing.

Also, I use normal oil, not syn. From what I've read, unless you use it pretty much the life of the car, you shouldn't. Since mine was normal before I bought it, I'm not changing now. (55,000 miles)

      Good Luck

Run no less than 10W-30 in these cars unless you're in the bitter north and know 5W-30 is necessary for cold cranking.

I like the Valvoline Maxlife, I find my engine runs the quietest on it and my oil consumption problem (0.5qts in 3000 miles) went away with it. Its also inexpensive and 50% PAO Esters. Seems to hold up well .

I'm using MaxLife now but will be switching to regular ol Castrol GTX or Pennzoil next change. Tried Mobil 1 for about a year and for me, wasn't worth it. I change it 3k anyways so regular is good enough.
