  • Stuck in Open Loop

I know that my car runs rich, it has since I bought it in August. Every once in a while the SES light comes on so today I bought a scanner. I followed the directions but the SES light will not flash. I read the book further and performed the test with the engine running. With the engine running at operating temp, SES light flashes very fast, meaning the car is stuck in open loop.

According to the book the light will not flash because there is no signal from the oxygen sensors. I checked the sensors and they are connected properly.

Is the computer bad? Where do I begin?

Does anyone think disconnecting the battery to reset the computer could help?

that sounds more like a temporary fix but what could it hurt... having to reset your radio, i say try it and see what happens.

to get the code connect the scaner into the port turn on the ingntion, (not the motor) then you will be able to take the reading and just after you have the reading turn off the ingintion and remove the scaner. if it is not working then you might have a bad scaner don't call me on it but it is a maybe & the one i used was off a friend of mine so i don't know if you have a differnt one or it works differnt but that is how most of them work. when i was running rich it was an o2 senser circut 1 bank 1 witch was the driverside header.

It's strange. The SES light comes on but won't flash. I purchased an Actron CP9001 scanner. According to the book, if the light won't flash then "You have a problem which must be repaired before proceeding". God only knows where the problem is. There could be a short, bad computer, loose connection, bad sensor, etc.....

I think I am going to sell the Scanner on ebay, and pull the SES bulb for good.

I love the car, and I can live with my 15-18 MPG I guess.

I do not know whats up with your cheap *** scanner but having an SES light that does not flash still means you have a problem. The only meaning behind a flashing SES light is that emissions have have reached a point that will/can cause catalyst damage. Go to autozone and have it scanned or get a better scanner

I was waiting for you to chime in. I know you are very knowledgable when it comes to this stuff.

Autozone and Advance Auto no longer scan OBD 1. I know it has a problem. What I was able to determine is that it is running in open loop all the time. When I scan it with the engine off, key on, the light turns on but will not flash. I just tried the scanner on my neighbors 1989 Buick and it worked fine. Showed code 12 only meaning his car is fine. It is my car, not the scanner. What could the issue be that the SES will not flash with the scanner connected?

yeah check the fuse. probably your accessory/cig fuse. I am mainly stumped by the issue because you are using an aftermarket scanner and it seems from your instructions, does things way different than a tech 1.

Maybe it is the scanner when it is connected to our cars. It is really strange. I don't know anyone with a good OBD1 scanner that I can try out. The car runs great, everything works fine, it just uses more gas then it should and it runs rich. I think Mr. Actron is going up for sale on ebay...

I will. I know the Accessory / Cig fuse is good because my Satellite radio is plugged into it. But I will check the others just in case.
