  • Loud clicking, power loss when cold.

OK so here is the problem that has been bugging me for a while.

2001 Camaro 3.8L, 40K miles. When I start the car cold, it makes a loud ticking noise that sounds like a bad tappet (only louder). As I drive the car feels like it has no power, almost as if the timing is retarded. The trans takes forever to shift up to 2nd and 3rd.

As the car warms up the noise begins to abate and power returns. By the time it is fully warm (around 200') the cars sounds good and runs normal.

    Any ideas?

yes the same thing happened to me. that ticking sound you hear is one of your push rods sticking. because of that yo get the power loss, i don't know why your trany is shifting slow but it would be a good idea to check the fluid. the reason why you are ticking when it is cold and then it goes away is because your are useing to thick of oil. when it was happening to me i was using 10w 40 so i went down to 5w 30 with a synthetic (you don't have to use synthetic i just have 65k on my car and it helps the motor more with that milage) but regular is just fine, durring the winter and i haven't had a problem sence, but remember to go back to 10w 40 when summer hits.
