  • How many ponies?

Hey guys, i'm a noob so i know i can get away with this noobish question.:) ..here goes.... I've got a stock 160hp 93 3.4 firebird, I'm replacing the Cat with a high flow cat (Catco), installing a flowmaster 80 series 2.5" cat back system, replacing stock air intake with K&N FIPK, replacing old thermostat with 180 degree thermostat, and adding a stage 2 jet chip to my pcm. Here's the nooby question, how many ponies do you think i'll have after that? I realize every car is different and even applications make a difference, but say someone asked me to give them a range ex:180-190 hp, what would you guys say? Also i realize these are bolt ons and thats as far as i want to go for lack of funds and laziness, thanx

15-17rwhp is my range. The 3.4 starts out low already so your gains are not as big as say a v8 just due to engine size and all.

hey, does rwhp mean something different than horespower in general? I've heard horsepower gets lost in transition from the engine, so would 15-17 actual horsepower be less than the "engine" horsepower? i hope u get what i'm asking

yes flywheel (fwhp) is what is at the engine, rear wheel (rwhp) is what you actually get to the ground

car manuf. state everything as flywheel, like the 3.8l engine having 200hp when in reality they usually dyno 160 on the dynos to the tires.

15 -17 HP refers to horsepower made at the engine, not with the tranmission engaged.

my rwhp est. smae as blldogg

When he says 15-17rwhp he means what gets to the wheels... hence the abbreviation: r(rear)w(wheel)h(horse)p(power). Car companies rate their cars in net horsepower (sometimes called brake horsepower, or bhp) which is the power at the fly wheel, as opposed to gross horsepower which is the theoretical hp (if there was no such thing as friction) of the engine in a perfect world. Rear wheel horse power is what makes its way to the wheels and the ground, and is usually 10-20% less than the net horsepower due to drivetrain loss. Drivetrain loss being all the ponies that are spent up in the transmission (all those gears gotsta turns somehows). So when he says 15-17rwhp thats about 20 net horses.. or basically you'll go from 160hp to 180ish.

sure is fun to dream thogh? lol In all honesty, i'm satisfied with just increasing power to where i can feel it and know it's there.

Yup, me too. Physics sucks. Thats mainly why i abandoned power adders in favor of suspension mods (well that and the vast quantity of quality "drivers" roads around here). Lateral g's = easier to obtain than Linear g's :)
