This has happened 5 times in the last few weeks. I will be sitting at a stop light and my 97 firebird 3800 will surge for a second and then run normal. It seems like it reaves to 1500 rpm and then goes back down , can't be sure about this because I was not lookig at my tach when it happens .The last time it happened I noticed the the amp gage whet in the negative and then returned to the good side. I am stumped ,any ideas
THANKS
RANDY
Idle Air Control Valve (IAC). If you have a Chilton's Manual, it's on page 4-35. On 3.8's, it's located on the front of the intake manifold, passenger side, just behind the Throttle Body. It measures the air coming into the engine and adjusts the idle. When they go bad or get clogged, they can play games with the idle. Cleaning them can solve the problem, but I would just replace it. Autozone has them in stock. I bought mine a few years back for $26. I'm not sure if the price has gone up since then...?
Another thing: the IAC on my car (97 Firebird) had tamper-proof torx screws. Regular torx bits won't work. I bought a... T-15 (I think, I left it in the car and can't recall whether it was T-15 or T-20). tamper proof torx bit for my nut driver and all was well.
The auto parts store should have a plastic "driver check" keyring that you can use to double check whether it's T-15 or T-20.

Yeah, they are easy to replce if you have the right size torx screwdriver. Again, I got rid of all the useless torx screws on my camaro. I notched every one of them (including the headlight screws) with a dremel moto-tool so a flathead screwdriver fits in it. Next best thing since sliced bread ;)
