  • Resistor spark plugs, or non-resistor spark plugs in a 3.4? That is the question.

So what should we be using in the 3.4? Resister spark plugs for a slower spark, or non-resistor sparkplugs for a hotter shorter spark?

I really want to use the NGK Iridiums in the 3.4 like it calls for in the 3.8, but this resistance / no resistance thing has really ****ed up my formula for figuring this all out.

I say go hot, unless you have some sort of power adder

I don't get it either. I'm not talking about the insulator length (which most people refer to when they talk "hot" or "cool"). I'm talking about high resistance or low resistance, which is supposed to vary the length of time of the spark.

there's two sets of NGK spark plugs i'm looking at...one says "stock" the other says "power adder" (runs one set cooler than stock) which one should i get?

"power adder"- like with nitrous/turbo you want to you run a cooler plug. Straight from NGK's website is "In short, select one heat range colder for every 75-100 hp you add, or when you significantly raise compression"

oh, and you want a resistor spark plug

so if i'm just doing mods that wont add more than 50 hp i should get the stock ones? and should they be resistors plugs?

You want whatever type (resistor or nonresistor) type your manual specifies.

Using a nonresistor plug where a resistor is called for = lots of RF (radio) interference.

Using a resistor plug where a nonresistor is called for = weak spark

a resistor plug on a system designed for it makes a hotter spark. the resistance pushes the voltage up before it fires making a more dramatice spark that will jump a greater distance.
