  • Car turns over but will not start

I am, for lack of a better term, pissed.

I fixed the misfire problem by replacing the previous owners' crap plugs/wires with brand new AC Delco plugs and wires a few months ago.

Just last week I had my entire cooling system flushed and had a faulty water pump replaced.

Most of the time the car is fine, but every once in a while the car will just turn over and not start. If I continue to turn it over it'll just do it forever. If I let it set there for 5-10 minutes it'll sometimes start, and it'll sometimes sound like it's "closer" to starting, but not actually start.

My battery died trying to start the car. I got someone to jump me, and it would still turn over but not start, so it's not the battery.

I'm guessing the obvious answer is "bad starter", but based on what I've already replaced, what could it be?

If it is a bad starter, how much will it probably be to replace it? As for now... my car is sitting dead in a parking lot 30 miles away...

    Thanks...

      Thanks. Anyone else?

How much should it cost to get that replaced?

I am not sure how much it is to fix a starter, but I know its pretty freakin expensive to fix a fuel pump because they will need to drop the whole rearend and the gas tank to get to it. You are better off doing it yourself by doing the "trap door" method.

          Care to elaborate?

I've always been good with my hands and figuring out ways to jerry-rig things, but when it comes to the actual procedure and what to expect and what to do... that is where I'm kind of stuck with cars.

Is there a guide on here somewhere?

          Thanks again. : )

I used this guide to swap in my pump and it wasnt all that hard at all, just a little time consuming. :)

              Thank you!

One more question... Do our cars use the same fuel pumps as the V8s? Might be a stupid question, but again... not a car guy. In other words, can I buy the exact pump mentioned in this guide and be set?... or do I need to buy one specifically for the V6 version?

I think this is something I could do if the fuel pump is truly failing. The problem is finding a time and tools to do it... Maybe I could get my dad to come up to college for the weekend and help me fix it.

Our cars use the exact same pump as the V8's. My new pump is just a Walbro 255lph made for Fbodies (V6 or V8), it was about $125 from Summit.

Okay... so this one would last for a really long time? (hopefully for the life of the car)

Also, what's the deal with that plug and play wiring stuff... worth getting?

^^ I dont know anything about that kit, I'd just get a Walbro, it was really easy to do. No wiring involved, just unplugged the old one and plugged the new one in.
