  • Can I manually lift a window stuck in the down position?

    Hey guys,
Today my passenger side window got stuck in the down position, and I'm fully aware that it's the window motor/switch at fault.

I need to know whether I can take the door panel off and manually push the window into the "up" position? (for the time being, until I can get a window motor and time to work on the car)

If so, would I just remove the inside panel and push up? I have all the screws out but I was forced to cover the car due to some incoming rain.

    Thanks

anybody? I'm pretty much gonna go ahead and try if there's no one who thinks it'd be a bad idea

Sorry it won't work. You cannot push the window up manually, it will not stay up without the motor turning the gear assembly. The only way to make it go up (and stay up) is to fix the problem.

Well, technically the motor works, because I was able to guide the window up a little at a time, however it won't budge in either direction without a little manual help.

I'm just leaving it up for the time being until I can get in there after the rain.

          Thanks guys.

You're going to have to remove the switch and physically jump the power wires in order to activate the motor. I had to do this once. I left the door panel on, but pulled the window switches out so it would expose the underside of them. I then took a screwdriver and jumped the power wire -to- window motor pins, and the window went up. If the window goes back down, try the next pin.

This is for an emergency only. Do not keep doing this or you'll surely burn something out. Replace the switch asap.

OH!! And ONLY jump two pins at a time!! Never more than two!

It sounds like your motor is dead, there may be nothing wrong with the switch. If this is the case, yes you can help it up. You are simply putting less of a load on the motor so it will work less while its dieing.

It may be a dead motor, but I actually had a window switch break on me once. Only reason I knew it was the switch was the window would make a sound as I was pushing DOWN, but did nothing when I hit the UP button. I jumped it and the window motor came back to life.

i was told by everyone that my motor was goin out, i bought a new switch since it was less then 10 bux and fixed the problem. can't hurt to try switch first, but sounds like the motor is dead to me if its really slow

yeah well I need a driver's side switch anyway so I may as well pick up both sides' switches while I'm at it. I'll try that first and change the motor as a last resort... I'm alright technically but if I don't have to do any drilling I'd be much happier haha.

oah don't worry about the drilling, it's not nearly as bad as it sounds, there is a writeup out there somewhere that shows you where to drill 2 small holes in the door, which gives you access to the rivets which hold the motor in place. On that note though if you do have to go this route DO NOT DRILL THE LARGE RIVETS THAT ARE VISIBLE WHEN YOU TAKE OFF THE PANEL!! these hold the inner structure to the door. The rivets you drill are 3 small ones on the motor itself.
