quote:
Unfortunately, I think that poor gas mileage is a trait of the 3.4 liter engine.

I would have to agress with that statement. I really think that the engine is just too under powered for our cars that weigh in excess of 3000 pounds. I have a 95 3.8 and I never see less than 20 mpg and that is with the gruesome drives through rush hour traffic everyday (comes to about 50/50 driving). I drive to MN at least once a month from the Milwaukee land and I usually see 24-26 mpg in the winter and 26-31 during the summer months. If I drive right around 55-60 mph I never get less than 29 mpg during the summer. But you'll notice that most people with 3.4s are having a hard time mustering up good gas milage numbers. The V8's easily get equal gas milage as our little six cylinder cousins.

I'm doing really bad if I only get 250 miles per tank. I can sometimes draw it out to 300, all city.

18-20mpg here...which equates to almost about 270mi. I'll never drain the full 16.8 out of it.

I got 143 miles on my last full tank. I bought a new O2 sensor at Auto Zone this morning, but I can't find the damn thing under the hood.

the o2 sensor is somewhere on your exhausting piping or exhaust manifolds. if you only have one, it is right before the catalytic convertor.

after your engine warms up, you can measure the voltage on your o2 sensor. or rather, you should be looking for several 'zero crossings' per second (this is easiest to measure near the pcm connections -- exhaust pipes are HOT). if you o2 sensor doesnt do this (constant value, or slowly changes) it needs replaced. generally, they need replaced every 60,000 miles.

I read these post and cannot see how you guys and gals get such terrible fuel mileage. I live at or above 6500 feet... less air or thinner and I get around town 24 mpg and at 65MPH get 35. Last week went on a trip running the freeway above 5000 feet @ 75 MPH and averaged 32. Some of it could be the fuel blend in your part of the country.

I can see you're up in age so you probably drive the car REAL easy as opposed to some of us. Where does your car usually shift (what RPMs). I'm usually shifting between 2,500 and 3,000 with the auto and I'm getting around 20mpg city. You must be really babying the car.

Keep in mind that you've also got less air resistance to push through. The computer will take care of putting the right amount of fuel to the air coming into the engine, so being at altitude doesn't necessarily mean wasting gas.

Actually, you might save gas up there, since with the thinner air you'd have less power available, so flooring it won't burn as much as those of us at lower alts..

I usually get between 23 and 25 MPG. I usually fill up at about 325 miles, Then its getting kinda low on the guage, but the tank only takes like 14 gallons or so. But yeah, I figure I get prett good mileage.

As everyone said, the basic tune up stuff usually goes a long ways towards gas mileage.

well from a qurter of a tank i put 20 dollars in and got just over 3 qurters and that was at 3:00pm and by 1:30am i was back down to a qurter so i think my car needs a tuneup!!I never go below a qurter becuase it hurts the fuel pump

Well I drive my car easy HMMM we must define what easy is. At todays increasing fuel expense easy would be the way to keep from spending $$$$.$$ on gas. The wife drives harder then I do, we she drives it the mileage goes to 23~24 mpg.
I challenge the low MPG people to drive real easy for a tank or three of gas and see what the mileage is. Did it go up or stay the same. If it stays the same low mpg resolve the problem. If it goes up quit griping about low mpg.
