  • Sorry guys....pulley Q

Sorry if this has been beaten to death....but since tomorrow i'm putting a new crankshaft pulley on my 93 3.4 and i just wanted to clear some stuff up before hand.

    1. Do i NEED a pulley puller to replace it or can i just use the tensioner pulley?

    2. What tools will i need to get the 5 bolts out of the pulley?

    3. When installing the new pulley can i use the old hardware from the old pulley...will they fit?

    4. When re-tightening the bolts how do i know i have it at the correct ft lbs torque (i think it's 37)

Anyone who can answer any of these i'd much appreciate as i am doing this very soon!

you NEED a pulley puller to pull your crank pulley

to get the bolts out, leave your belt on, and simply remove them with a socket wrench

      old hardware SHOULD fit

i wouldnt worry too much about tq spec, just make sure they are tight.

You do NOT need a puller to remove the pulley on a 3.4 you just unbolt it and pull it off. If it's never been off you might have to tap it with a mallet to loosen it. There are no threads in the crank pulley anyway so a puller would be useless. On the 3.4 the harmonic balancer is a seperate piece pressed on behind the pulley... now that you would need the puller for.

Put the car in 5th gear and set the e-brake so it doesn't want to move when you loosen/tighten the center bolt. If you have an auto you can stick a screwdriver in the starter plate teeth to keep it from spinning.

You WILL need a shorter belt when installing a crank pulley alone, probably like 1½" shorter. I used a Dayco Polycog 5060760 but any xx60760 should work... that's a 6-rib belt, 76" in length.

looks like i'm the one getting pwned...wtf is 5th gear? What do i stick the screwdriver in?...i assume i will see the teeth spinning if i don't then but do you need to jam it in before it starts to spin?... and the belt tensioner really won't pick up the slack? that sux balls

            thanx for the info

you probably are auto, so just put it in park

and you may have to put a screwdriver in the flex plate(the plate between the motor and transmission) to stop the crank pulley from just spinning.
