whats up guys, Lets see. I have a 98 trans am, and need a tune up.So I went to Pep Boys to buy some AC Delco spark Plugs. The guy told me that the Spark Plugs have a Gap of 040, and to leave them like that, not to change them. My car needs the gap to be 060,I need to know if anything bad would happen to my car if I change it to 060. Should I just return them and buy another brand, or did the guy know what he was talking about. Right know im confused, I need to know what to do before I start. Oh the Spark Plugs are "AC Delco Iridium Spark Plugs."
do not under any circumsances regap iridiams or platinums it weakens them to the point that and electrode breaking off wile there in you engine is likley get a different parts guy i know alot of people are using ngk tr6's with good success though

must be you know a lot of guys that are FI and/or on the nitrous bottles. :) Those plugs are colder, gapped at .035 and made for the big power adder peeps.

That's what I have. I put them in after I seafoamed, and my car got abit better mileage, and abit more low end (now can chirp 2nd without really trying). nothing really noticable though....

Says who...other than the spark plug box? The idea that no platinum or iridium plug can be regaped is crazy.
Reality is that whether or not you can regap a platinum- or iridium-tipped plug depends on the plug's construction.
The double platinum ACDelcos, which were OE on most 04 and earlier engines, can be regaped because the only parts which are platinum are the little pucks which are laser-welded on the ends of the center and side electrodes. The side electrode, which is the part you bend slightly to change the gap, is made of typical plug material, a high-nickel content, steel alloy.
Many aftermarket iridium plugs, such as the Denso Iridium power IT20 pictured in the "Tom Henry RS" V6 project series at www.camarohomepage.com, is a "single iridium" tipped plug and can easily be regapped, simply by bending the ground electrode with the proper plug gapping tool. I run Denso IT20s or IT22s in every car I own and they're all regaped.
What you don't want to fool with in platinum tipped or iridium tipped plugs are any electrodes which are fine wire. The center electrodes on many Bosch and Densos are like that. But...no one modifies the center electrode on a plug anyway. Now, in the case of a plug with a fine wire ground electrode, then don't regap.
