• shifting with an auto?

I have a 99 a4, stock transmission with overdrive. I was talking to my friends brother who just finished bulding a 69 Camaro, so he knows a lot about cars. he said if I worked on shifting through 1, 2, Drive, then overdrive i would actually be faster, then just keeping it in overdrive. Is he right?

It doesnt matter, You hit the rev limiter and it upshifts anyway. Same thing as flooring it from a stop. Every gear redlines.

The only anvantage to shifting an automatic is that it won't shift too soon. Basically, you wind it out further. This works better with older cars. But, like V8 Killer replied, These newer cars have rev limiters, and it would shift anyway. So just let the trans do it's own thing.

theres a big difference between shifting the old-school auto trannies and the electronically controlled ones we have today. He is right, in the old trannies you can shift them manually, forcing them to hold higher rpms if you were racing or just screwing around. In the newer ones you will just tear them up. If you REALLY want to manually shift it, do a conversion and swap in a TH350, or rebuild yours with a full manual valve body.

You can also buy shift kits that will do the same thing to the 4L60E. They allow you to control which gear you are in all the time no matter what speed your doing or how many rpm's. Only downside is if I remember correctly, you have to downshift all the time because it wont shift itself if left in overdrive. It basically makes the 4L60E a manual transmission with a torque converter instead of a clutch.

actually, if you try to shift it yourself and dont keep shifting, it can sometimes not shift and your riding your rev limiter on your stocker tranny ;)

Why didnt you just get a manual in the first place if you wanted to shift

shift kits dont allow you to shift an auto manually anymore than you can on a stock tranny, they just increase the firmness of each shift. I wouldnt recommend one without building the rest of the tranny, as it will increase wear and affect the lifespan of your otherwise stock tranny.... this is a debateable viewpoint though.

you can do it, i mean convert your 4L60E, buts its a full manual valvebody that needs to go in.... which means you need to do a full teardown and rebuild, I believe.

I was told not to install my trans go kit, due to the fact I would kill second gear really fast and the rest of the tranny after that. So, I am just waiting for rebuild time down the road and beef it up and install it then.
