  • Not getting any spark

I've spent the last couple of weeks rebuilding the top end of my motor. I've ported and polished the heads and both intake manifolds, as well as the throttle body. I also got everything sandblasted and painted it up with duplicolor cast coat aluminum engine enamel. I got my pacesetter header installed and my comp cams camshaft instaled, along with new lifters, pushrods, valve springs, retainers and stem seals, not to mention new gaskets & seals all around. I got everything back together last night and tried to start it and it would not fire. In fact, it sounded like timing was way out.

To make a long story short, I did a whole load of trouble shooting and discovered that I'm not getting any spark from the coils. I disconnected a few plug wires one at a time and the coils weren't even sparking. Then I tried to arc out one of the plug wires and got nothing.

Now my question is, what should I be checking? I'm thinking either a sensor is not hooked up right (either cam or crank sensor), or the coils / ignition module aren't grounded properly.

Any insight on this is muchly appreciated. If any more info is needed, please let me know.

    Re: Not getting any spark

There are test procedures for the various components. Next I would check the ignition module. Except that it is probably not getting a signal if no coils are working. But you have to work your way back. Also check the various ignition-related sensors for their signals.

Is the harness on the ignition module correctly? You could always take the module up to autozone to have it tested.

I took the module to work and it tested out fine. At first I thought I had the connector in the module wrong, but then I discovered it only went in there one way. I guess the next thing to check out is the crank and cam sensors.

            Re: Not getting any spark

Just thought I'd give you guys an update. It was the crank sensor that was unplugged. Plugged it back in and the car fired up first shot. Sounds great with all the new parts!!
