• double U tee Eff? Starter problems...

pulled the starter when I did the clutch... car drove for 3kish miles no problems.

did a tranny swap 2 days ago, but this time never pulled the starter never even unhooked it.

Started up fine no issues at least a dozen or more times. then today drove to work car was fine. Parked it, for 11 hours while at work. I started it up and the starter motor was continuously running, and if I shut the car down and took the keys out, starter was still cranking.

Since I lived near by decided to try a d make a run for it. halfway decided to stop. The car starter running the whole time, then I stopped because i was worried I was going to overheat it, starter still going with keys out, so I unhooked the bat, it stops. I started it up, same issue starter cranking. had to unhook battery, let car sit for a bit so it cooled down.

After like 5 min or so, car started up no problems drove around to get some airfow around the motor and cool it down( I could smell the starter "electrical smell" under the hood) drove home, shut it down and started it up a good 20 times no problems...

any ideas? think the wires on the starter are getting crossed?

Question: 1995 Pontiac Grand Am 2.3L mileage: 69900. Installed a new starter today and I am having some problems with it. After I turn the key, the starter starts and won't stop. It makes a loud whining noise that I assume is the starter not disengaging. Then I shut the ignition off, and the starter continues trying to turn the engine. I had to disconnect the battery to stop this. What is it?

Answer: It sounds like you have either replaced the wires incorrectly to the starter or you have a faulty starter.

Question: 1990 Mercury Sable 3.8L mileage: 119,000. I seem to have an electrical gremlin. Sometimes when I start the car, the starter won't disengage. The only way to get it to disengage is to play with the ignition key lock cylinder (turn to start position & back a few times) or disconnect a battery cable. It only does this intermittently, and I can't predict when it will happen. I've had it to the shop 4 times already: the starter has been replaced twice, the solenoid replaced 3x, the ignition switch replaced once, and the ignition key lock cylinder replaced once. Any suggestions?

Answer: Sounds like you have replaced everything that normally would have caused your problem. We would suggest hooking up two temporary test lights. Hook one test light to the main power to the starter and the second one to the solenoid terminal that is energized by the ignition switch. Now with the test lights in place, when the "electrical gremlin" strikes, you can pinpoint your problem. It could be damaged wires or a starter gear that does not disengage from the flywheel.

That's what happens when you stop racing. Camaros like to go fast and aren't happy when you won't let them.
