Re: 10w30 vs. 5w30
on my 94 3.4 it says to use 5w-30 on the oil dipstick and the oilcrankcase plug. But usually peoeple run 10w-30. It only really matters on what the season is like. When it is winter you want to run a alittle thinner oil and in the summer you want to run a little thicker. more protections against heat. hope that helps alittle.

Re: 10w30 vs. 5w30
I would not recommend any oil additives. Just change your oil when you should and you should have no problems. If you are worried about build up run a top end cleaner like seafoam.My old car.<br />2000 Firedird 5-Speed<br />1/4 E.T. 15.601 @ 88.659 w/2.411 60\'<br /><br />New car.<br />1999 T/A 6-Speed<br />1/4 E.T. 13.181 @ 106.971 w/2.15 60\'

Re: 10w30 vs. 5w30
I base the use of the oil viscosity for my cars on 2 things.
1) starting as a base, I establish the recommended oil viscosity published in the owner manual, which in itself is based on ambient temperatures (as BLLDOG said). Just don't go by whats on the dipstick and the oil fill cap. Those are generalizations.
2) From that I will adjust the viscosity to be used based on the wear that the engine has.
for example: When I had my 87 olds 88 with the 3.8, the recommended oil at an ambient (outside air temp) temp of 20 Degrees C was 5W30. But the engine had high milage and was producing a bit of noise in the valvetrain and was starting to use a little oil. So I adjustrd up to using a 10W30, and then eventually to a 10W40.
Also remember that if you increase the power output of your engine, (forced induction, cam changes, nitros, etc....) you should be adjusting your viscosities to the thicker oils as well. (Thats the one of the reasons that 3500 hp Top AA Fuelers uses straight 90 weight oil, or higher!)Now Playing: \'99 Pewter Firebird, stock, bone stock, and nothing but stock, so help me God!<br />Comming attractions: K&N Filter, Lid Mod, Intake Bellows Smooth Pipe Mod.<br />I dream about: Forced Induction (TC or SC) or NOX (or both!)
